Abstract
7,9-Dimethylcyclopenta[a]acenaphthylen-8(H)-one (2b) upon heating in boiling toluene loses carbon monoxide giving the diene 3 in quantitative yield. Benzyne (2moles) generated from anthranilic acid is trapped with this diene at 34C or above (85C) furnishing 7,12-dimethylbenzo[K]fluoranthene (7) in high yields.
