Abstract
This study investigated the relationship among junior high school students’ reading mindset and their perceptions of teachers’ beliefs and teaching practices in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in Isfahan, Iran. Adopting a descriptive-correlational research design, the study was conducted with 150 male students from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades enrolled in private schools. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires measuring students’ reading mindset and their perceptions of teachers’ beliefs and instructional practices. The findings revealed a strong positive relationship between students’ reading mindset and their perceptions of teachers’ beliefs, indicating that students who perceive their teachers as supportive and growth-oriented are more likely to develop a positive reading mindset. In contrast, a significant negative relationship was found between students’ reading mindset and their perceptions of teachers’ teaching practices, suggesting that students with a stronger growth mindset may evaluate more traditional or teacher-centered instructional approaches less favorably. Furthermore, the combined influence of teachers’ beliefs and teaching practices demonstrated a significant relationship with students’ reading mindset, highlighting the importance of aligning instructional practices with teachers’ educational beliefs. Overall, the findings support the assumptions of growth mindset theory and underscore the important role of teachers in shaping students’ reading-related beliefs and attitudes in EFL contexts. The study provides practical implications for promoting supportive classroom environments and adopting instructional approaches that foster students’ motivation, engagement, and reading development.
