Due to the rise of technology and the appearance of platforms such as Twitter, Telegram, WhatsApp, and Instagram, the issue of politeness has faced new challenges. The current study investigated (im) politeness in English comments based on Leech’s grand strategy of politeness (Leech’s ten constraints) on Instagram. This study’s corpus consisted of 20,043 words and 696 posts from various topics on Instagram during 2022-2024.After counting the features, findings showed that the agreement constraint had the highest frequency (32.7 %). Moreover, the result indicated that tact was the most widely violated constraint (32.1%) by Instagram users. To notice the significance of differences among the constraints and constraints violation, repeated measures ANOVA and post hoc Tukey analysis were conducted. The results showed significant differences among all constraints, except between tact and modesty, generosity and feeling reticence, generosity and opinion-reticence, sympathy and obligation of others to speaker, and opinion-reticence and feeling-reticence. Considering constraints violation, the findings showed significant differences exist among all constraints violation, except between approbation and obligation of the speaker to others, agreement and generosity, agreement and obligation of others to the speaker, agreement and opinion-reticence, generosity and opinion-reticence, sympathy and modesty, and sympathy and feeling-reticence. The study emphasizes the value of analyzing English comments on Instagram for language education, offering authentic insights into politeness and impoliteness. Language teachers can enhance students’ pragmatic skills, while learners can improve their online communication abilities. Materials developers are urged to create resources that consider the cultural and ethical dimensions of digital interactions.
