111 Evaluating Methods of Infiltration Measurement in Sprinkler Irrigation Systems and Developement of Its Transfer Functions Arezou Ardeshiri arezou ardeshiri@yahoo com 13 January 2015 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MSc Language FarsiSupervisor Assist Prof Mahdi Gheysari gheysari@cc iut ac irAbstractGiven the increasing importance of water in agriculture major investments for the evelopment of dpressurized irrigation systems in particular sprinkler irrigation have een done In other hand bprecision in designing sprinkler irrigation systems is an mportant factor in reducing runoff For the ipurpose of correct designing and reventing of surface runoff recognizing soil infiltration ate I is p rnecessary as the most important parameter in designing rrigation systems This study was conducted ito compare three field methods of easuring the soil infiltration rate includes double ring DR mtension infiltrometer TD and ime of ponding TP methods and developing of pedotransfer unctions t fto estimate the soil infiltration rate Also the Green Ampt Philip Kostiakov modified Kostiakov and Horton and the America s Soil Conservation Service were evaluated At all five experimental siteswere measured four indicators of soil texture initial moisture bulk ensity and organic content dpercentage in three replicates The results showed that the nfiltration rate has significant correlation iwith organic content percentage bulk ensity initial soil moisture percentage and clay and silt dpercentages Developed edotransfer functions had high accuracy in estimating the soil infiltration prate Also it as observed that the measured I values in the DR method on verage were 2 3 times w amore than TP method nd 4 5 times more than TD method in loamy and and sandy clay loam a stextures The final infiltration rate values of TD method to the suction of 2 5 and 10 cm were about4 3 and 2 times ore than TP method respectively lso the final infiltration rate values of DR m Amethod were 5 times more than P method Saturated hydraulic onductivity values were calculated T cby TP method on average were 1 5 imes more than DR method Hydraulic conductivity of TP tmethod were 0 7 and 4 times more than DR and TD ethods in investigated soils respectively Our 0 mresults suggest that the need of adjustment final infiltration values and hydraulic conductivity whichwerw resulted from double ing and tension infiltrometer methods in designing sprinkler irrigation rsystems The highest average correlation coefficients between the field data and estimated data wereobserved for Kostiakov and Horton odels and the lowest average correlation coefficient was mobserved for the America s Soil onservation Service model Overall we concluded that for esigning C dsprinkler irrigation systems in farm scale over 100 ha infiltration rate would be measured by thetime of ponding method However in the field scale lower than 100 ha it can be measured by doublering and tension infiltrometer ethods then infiltration rate values have to adjust by be developed mequations Keywords Infiltration Double ring Tension infiltrometer Time of ponding Pedotransfer functions Infiltration equations
