Investigation of Flow Distribution on Hydraulic Behavior and Treatment Efficiency of a Constructed Wetland Seyed Saeid Okhravi S okhravi@ag iut ac ir December 30 2014 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Saeid Eslamian Saeid@cc iut ac irAbstractOne of the serious strategies for sustainable management of water resources is wastewater reuse Because ofcomprehensive range of environmental pollutants this approach requires to additional treatment andstandardization based on the kind of use Today due to the high cost of conventional treatment methods biological methods for decreasing contaminants such as constructed wetlands have been increased significantly Constructed wetland could be classified according to water regime to free water surface sub surface horizontalflow and sub surface vertical flow In addition to kinematic description of biological reaction flow patternplays an important role for designing constructed wetlands This study is looking for effect of flow distributionon constructed sub surface horizontal wetland Inlet configurations are selected as a variable parameter Threedifferent cases of the inlet and outlet configuration are midpoint midpoint 1 corner midpoint 2 and uniform midpoint 3 Outlet has been fixed in all of configuration This study adopted sub surface horizontalconstructed wetland by dimension of 26 meters long 4 meters wide and with 1 percent bed slope Uraninetracer is used to determine the influences of flow distribution by drawing hydraulic retention time curve indifferent cases Mean residence time for each configuration is equal to 4 532 3 242 and 4 657 daysrespectively Flow procedure will specify based on direct relation between the main peak on the retention timecurve Cpeak and dispersion Uniform inlet had the lowest Cpeak that is shown ideal flow According to retentiontime curve effective volume was 87 5 at configurations 1 and 3 in spite of this value was 62 1 atconfiguration 2 This pattern demonstrated that the dead volume is equal to 38 and also short circuiting pathsat this configuration is maximizing among these configurations that are shown the lowest hydraulic operation Hydraulic efficiency for each configuration is equal to 96 57 and 94 respectively Comsol is a finite elementanalysis that is used to illustrate inner behavior of porous media Consequence of surface pressure and hydraulichead demonstrated uniform pressure from inlet toward outlet at configuration 3 Simulated stream line andcontour pressure approved this result while range of high and low pressure area at configuration 2 is the most Hydraulic head range at each configuration is equal to 14 35 15 25 and 13 05 centimeters respectively Longitudinal and cross sections specified movement of dispersive area near the inlet toward to liner state at theoutlet Intensity of pressure area is significantly varied at each configuration Also there is some equation forcalculating hydraulic head at any point for each configuration Simulating various porous media in Comsol isused to predict influence of porous media on hydraulic behavior and finally strong relation between hydraulicconductivity and pressure is obtained Overall based on the results of mean residence time and hydraulicparameters the best configuration of inlet is uniform midpoint Meanwhile midpoint midpoint is greatlypreferable to corner midpoint Keywords Configuration of inlet and outlet Effective volume Hydraulic efficiency Hydraulic retention time Short circuiting path Simulating Sub surface horizontalconstructed wetland Tracer test
