Effect of Strain Path on Copper Strip during Accumulative Roll Bonding Hossein Taheri hossein taheri@ma iut ac ir Date of submission January 10 2015 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisors M R Toroghinejad Professor toroghi@cc iut ac irA Rezaeian Assistant Professor a rezaeian@cc iut ac irAbstractIn the present study the effect of the strain path on microstructure and mechanicalproperties of a commercially pure copper strips fabricated via accumulative roll bonding ARB process was investigated The copper strips were produced up to 8 cycles bydirect ARB process route A and also ARB with rotation angle 90 anti clockwise routeBC route BA and 180 route C To conduct this study the strips with a thicknessof 1 mm and dimension of 5 15 cm were used for direct and 180 rolled and dimensionof 4 5 cm was used for rotations of 90 degrees The bonding between the strips duringthe ARB process with different routes was evaluated using optical microscopy The resultsindicated that in all routes the bonding strength was improved with increasing the numberof cycles It was also found that the interface bonding in the routes BC BA and C seemed tohave higher quality than that of route A In addition microstructural characterizations wereanalyzed by electron backscattered diffraction EBSD technique The EBSD imagesshowed a band like structure ARB process with routes A and C while the specimensproduced with routes BC and BA developed relatively equiaxed ultrafine grains Tensionand hardness tests were performed on the produced sheets for evaluating their mechanicalproperties The tensile strength and hardness values of the ARB processed copper stripswith different routes increased about almost twice than that of the initial values It was alsofound that the tensile strength and hardness values of the ARB processed specimens withroutes A and C were higher than that of ones for routes BC and BA In order to clarify thefailure mode fracture surfaces after tensile test were studied by scanning electronmicroscopy Fracture surfaces observations showed that failure mode in the ARBprocessed copper with different routes was shear ductile rupture with small elongateddimple Key words Accumulative roll bonding Strain path Mechanical properties Fracture surfaces microstructure
