81 Producing bulk samples of alumina tungsten carbide using self propagating high temperature synthesis Mohsen Maleki mohsen maleki@ma iut ac ir Date of submission January 17 2015 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor H Edris Professor h edris@cc iut ac irAbstractSelf propagating high temperature synthesis SHS is a novel method for fabrication ofcomposites Al2O3 WC composite has gained diverse applications in manufacturing ofcutting tools and wear resistant coatings due to its interesting properties such as highstrength and hardness chemical and thermal stability and so on Given the importance ofthis particular composite and the necessity to find a cost effective approach for productionof this composite and reducing the energy consumption this study was performed In thepresent study first the calculations regarding possibility of reaction between WO 3 Al andC and manufacturing Al2O3 WC composites by self propagating synthesis method weredone Then the required appropriate time for activation and mixing of the powders wasdetermined by trial and error method and milling at different times After initial pressing ofresulted mixed powders raw bulk samples were put in an apparatus capable of exertingpressure during SHS The special die of this apparatus creates a pseudo isostatic conditionfor exerting pressure After treatment in the aforementioned apparatus samples werecharacterized using X ray diffraction XRD analysis and electron microscopy withelemental analysis Obtained XRD patterns confirm the presence of WC and Al2O3 Bydecreasing the particle size reaction rate increased significantly alumina tungsten carbide composite Self Propagating High TemperatureKey words Synthesis Pseudo Hot Isostatic Pressing
