Design of Class A Vehicle Chassis Based on Topology Optimization Khadijeh Faramarzi k Faramarzi@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2015 01 14 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Mohsen Esfahanian mesf1964@cc iut ac irAbstract Nowadays reducing weight of products especially for the products that cause environmental pollutionsuch as vehicles is not only an option but also an obligation This project has focused on the early designphase of a class A mini vehicle At the early phases of design the level of details is low and the designfreedom is high By introducing a tool to support the initial body design of vehicles the potential of findingmore efficient structures increases In this study topology optimization of automotive chassis and structuredesign is presented which has been performed using ABAQUS software Topology is coupled with FEManalysis and adopted in cascade for reaching an optimum chassis configuration In the current work the objective of the design of Class A Vehicle chassis and structure is to reduce theweight The work is divided into two parts In the first part basic information regarding the technicalspecification of the vehicle is provided and then main targets are set Loading condition chassis types anddifferent analysis methods are discussed Packaging of vehicle components is done in order to determinedesign space for topological optimization of the chassis Similar consideration has been taken for passengercabin space In the second part topological optimization of chassis is done For investigation of load paths aswell as overall shape of the frame a pseudo density with values between 0 and 1 is considered for eachelement as the design variable By relating stiffness of each element to this pseudo density and defining theminimum compliance as the objective function and maximum volume fraction as the constraint the elementswhich have less structural role are omitted during the optimization process to minimize mass of the structure The process is begun by defining design space which is the allowable space that chassis and vehicle structurecan be placed in Then loads and boundary conditions are applied and topological optimization is performed After investigating the results of topological optimization a concept is presented for the chassis and thestructure In this project CATIA and ABAQUS software are widely used CATIA has been used in the fieldof CAD Finite element method is used for static analysis and is used to determine the strength and rigidityof the chassis and the vehicle structure subjected to the required loads The key of static analysis is toensure that loads are reasonable and they are in the standard limits The loads on body and structure arevery complex and have different modes but mostly torsion and bending are important ABAQUS hasbeen used to calculate the strength and stiffness in both bending and torsion load cases Finally the weakpoints of the chassis are identified and appropriate solutions for strengthening of them are presented Thefinal design of chassis has proper structural properties even though it has low weight KeywordsTopology Optimization mini vehicle Automotive chassis design finite element analysis
