96 Allelopathy Effect of Achillea Species on Some Weeds Gholamreza Niazipoor niazalishams114@gmail com January 2015 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors M H Ehtemam hehtemam@cc iut ac ir and H Karimmojeni kmojeni@cc iut ac ir Abstract Due to environmental hazards and risks of chemical control of weeds sustainable weed management is considered A concept interactions of interference in plants is allelophatic effects which can play an important role in sustainable weed management Achillea spp L is one of the species of plants with allelophatic activity By considering abundance of Achillea species in Iran two experiments were conducted in Isfahan University of Technology in 2013 2014 In the first experiment the factorial experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with three replications to investigate allelophatic potential of eight Achillea species collected from different area in Iran including A filipendulina of Ardebil A nobilis of Khorasan A nobilis of Borujerd A pachycephala of Golestan and A pachycephala of Hamedan A millefolium of Hamedan A tenuifolia of Isfahan and A santolina of Borujerd on seeds of Amaranthus retrofloxus Sisymbrium irio Carthamus oxyacantha Eruca sativa and Portulaca oleracea Aqueous extracts at concentrations of 0 3 6 12 25 50 and 100 prepared Rate and percentage of germination shoot and root length shoot and root fresh weight dry weight of shoot and root of target species were measured The results showed that different species have different effects in various concentrations on the traits considered A nobilis Borujerd had the highest inhibition and A Pachycephala Golestan had the lowest percentage of inhibition Extract concentrations at ranging from 3 to 12 had a stimulating effect and in 25 to 100 concentrations had an inhibitory effect on the target species Among weeds species Sisymbrium irio was most sensitive to Achillea allelophathy while Carthamus oxyacantha and Eruca sativa showed the lowest sensitivity In the second experiment allelophaty effect of essential oil of A nobilis Khorasan and Borujerd A filipendulina A santolina A pachycephala Golestan Hamedan on some weeds including Amaranthus retrofloxus Eruca sativa and Carthamus tinctorius at concentrations of 100 200 400 600 and 800 micro liter per liter was performed In this experiment as first experiment mentioned traits were measured Various concentrations of essential oils had different effects on target species This experiment showed that A retrofloxus was more sensitive compared with E sativa and C tinctorius Among species A pachycephala Hamedan and A filipendulina had stronger effects than other species In both experiments the results showed that essential oils and extracts of Achillea had stimulatory effect in low concentrations and inhibitory effect in higher concentrations Extracts had more effecive than essential oils in weeds control Inhibitory and stimulatory effects can be used as a tool for weed management Key words Allelopathy water extracts essential oils inhibitory stimulatory
