Effect of Different Levels of Dried Tomato Pomace on Growth Performance Rumen Fermentation and Health of Holstein Calves Reza akbari Rezar r7 a@yahoo com December 14 2014 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Esfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor alikhani@cc iut ac irAbstractThe present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels of dried tomato pomace DTP ongrowth performance rumen fermentation and health of Holstein calves Experiment was carried out basedon a completely randomized design with 3 treatment groups including 10 individual pens per each dietarytreatment 5 male and 5 female Holstein calves Dietary treatments consisted of 1 pelleted starter controlgroup 2 pelleted starter 7 5 DTP 3 pelleted starter 15 DTP The experimental period was 70 daysand all calves were weaned at day 56 Body weight and starter intake were recorded 7 days apart Rumenfluid samples were collected via a stomach tube at 70 of the study To evaluate blood parameters calveswere bled from the jugular vein on days 35 and 70 of experiment Statistical analysis showed that there wassignificant difference in daily starter intake between experimental groups p 0 01 So that the treatment of15 DTP of the pre weaning and entire trial Than other treatment Also the total feed intake of than the7 5 DTP control group P 0 05 Average daily gain Treatment was significantly pre weaning and post weaning was greater in the treated was 15 DTP P 0 05 In the course of the period daily weight gain ofin the treated 15 DTP was higher than the two other treatments p 0 01 Feed efficiency had not affectedby treatments P 0 05 Apparent DM OM and CP digestibility in diets after weaning were not affected but the number of treatments was less than 15 DTP P 0 05 Body measurements such as hip width hipheight body length wither height and heart girth were not significantly different among the treatmentsduring pre weaning and post weaning The stomach size was influenced by the treatments at p re weaning and post weaning Stomach size for calves fed with 15 DTP was highest p 0 01 Rumen pH wasinfluenced by the treatments at post weaning and rumen pH was highest for the calves fed the DTP p 0 01 Ammonia N concentration were influenced by the treatments and was highest for the calves fedthe 15 DTP P 0 05 Rumen fluid in calves consuming 15 DTP had concentrations of acetate on day70 P 0 05 also Butyrate levels were also higher in the control than in the other two treatments P 0 01 Calves fed 15 DTP spent more time to ruminate compared with the control group P 0 01 In relation tohealth indicators control the highest score in feces compared to other treatments had per weaning P 0 05 Serum cholesterol and LDL levels at 70 days was higher in the control and treated with 15 DTP showed asignificant difference P 0 05 The highest lymphocyte to neutrophil ratio was seen in calvessupplemented with 15 DTP P 0 05 In general results of this study show that the tomato pomace as asource of non forage fiber alongside pellet feed Calves can be encouraged to further improve feed intakeand fermentation rumen calves and also the immune system and improve blood lipid components Keywords calves Tomato pomace performance Ruminal fermentation health
