91 Preparing Sawdust Compost by Adding Different Nitrogen Sources and Their Effect on Growth and Development of Cucumber Elahe Ebrahimi Aqda elahe ebrahim@ag iut ac ir January 18 2015 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mostafa Mobli mobli@cc iut ac ir AbstractThere are too much agricultural wastes that can make an environmental pollution The management andreuse of organic wastes decreases environmental problems and increases utilization of these matters Oneof the most important ways to use organic waste materials is reuse of them in agriculture especially ascompost Composting of garden and animal wastes e g sawdust and manure is the best method thatcould improve the properties of this materials for reusing in production cycle Here two separate studieswere performed to evaluate the effects of co composting of sawdust and different nitrogen sources oncharacteristics of these mixtures during composting process as well their effects as growing media on thecucumber growth In the first study the effects of co composting of sawdust with cow manure poultrymanure and urea on some characteristics of these mixtures were evaluated This study was carried outduring 49 days and the samples were taken at 0 7 14 21 28 35 42 and 49 days of incubation andanalysis was done Results showed that adding of poultry manure to sawdust had the best effect onreduction of organic carbons and increasing carbon to nitrogen ratio and the maximum of nitrogen contentwas obtained in mixing with cow manure during the composting period Also application of N richmaterial was improved water holding capacity of these mixtures when compared to control Poultrymanure significantly increased particle and bulk density more than other treatments The lowest bulkdensity as well highest aeration porosity was obtained at 35th day after incubation In the second study weused of the mixtures produced in the first study with 10 pumice or without Pumice as growing mediafor cucumber cv Storm Here we used also Peat 80 Perlite 20 mixture which is a common growingmedia for cucumber as a control to compare with our treatments The results of this study showed thatadding of poultry manure to sawdust has the most positive effects on growth characteristics plant height number of nodes stem diameter and dry weight and characteristics of cucumber roots in comparisonwith the pure sawdust There were no significant differences on percent of fruit dry matter betweentreatments The maximum fresh weight and number of fruits obtained when manures added to sawdust The results also showed that co composting of sawdust with inorganic and organic nitrogen sources couldimprove the properties of fruits quality such as soluble solids content in comparison with sawdust and thehighest concentration of nitrogen sodium potassium in fruits observed in pure sawdust treatment According to this study co composting of sawdust with animal manures particularly with poultry manurecould be recommend for practical study as a growing media for cucumber Keywords Compost Media culture Sawdust Nitrogen rich source
