70An investigation in to the production and properties of nylon 6nanofibers containing copper oxide nanoparticles Seyd davod hasanzade tabatabaee sd hasan@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc LanguagePersian Supervisors sedighe Borhani sborhani@cc iut ac ir Advisor Bahzad Rezai Bahzad rezai@iut ac irAbstractAbstractResearch on nanoparticles has been significantly developed because of their unusual physical andchemical properties These particles have novel physical and chemical properties due to their size surfaceand quantum size effect Metal oxide nanoparticles have been widely studied due to their unique optical electrical and catalytic properties Among these materials copper oxide nanoparticles have specialfeatures including abundance in the nature low cost stability compared to the non oxidized state and thenon toxic property In this work copper oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using the gel combustionmethod Nylon 6 nanofibers containing 0 2 4 and 8 wt copper oxide nanoparticles were prepared byelectrospining and their properties were investigated The surface morphology and properties of copperoxide nanoparticles and nylon 6 nanofibers were analyzed by SEM FTIR XRD DSC and TGA tests Copper oxide nanoparticles XRD results showed a good agreement with the findings reported in thereferences and a high purity too The average particle size of copper oxide nanoparticles as measured bySEM was found to be about 45 nm The results FTIR tests also confirmed the existence of nanoparticlesin the nanofibers The nanofibers diameter was decreased by increasing the amount of copper oxidenanoparticles due to increasing the electrical conductivity of the polymer solution Furthermore a slightincrease in Tg Tm and Tc of nylon 6 nanofiber containing 8 wt copper oxide nanoparticles was observed The results also showed a decrease in the thermal stability of nanofibers containing copper oxidenanoparticles As another stage of the study Nylon 6 nanofibers containing different percentages ofcopper oxide nanoparticles were tested for antibacterial properties of both E coli and Bacillus subtilis Itwas found that copper oxide nanoparticles could have inhibitory effects on the growth of bacteria in theNB environment Keywords Nanoparticles copper oxide nanofibers nylon 6 Electrospining
