216 Design with Analysis of Chassis and Rear Suspension System for Pickup Truck Vehicle to increase Performance and Facilitation in Loading Saeed Mokhtari s mokhtari@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2015 07 27 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Dr Mohsen Esfahanian mesf1964@cc iut ac ir and Dr Mostafa Ghayour ghayour@cc iut ac ir AbstractPickup truck vehicles play an important role in transportation and distribution of goods and facilities withinthe cities so the distribution of daily consuming goods is deeply depended on this kind of vehicles Commonpickup truck vehicles have a cargo box with a fixed bed so the loading and unloading process usually needsto be done by auxiliary equipment or by hand The methods used for loading and unloading are inflexible fordifferent conditions and usually a large space is needed In these methods the goods need to be displacedseveral times and so the safety risks increase The aim of current study is to create a new design for the rearpart of the pickup truck vehicle to facilitate the loading and unloading process Our proposal includes a U shape rear chassis which has a bed structure This bed structure can move up and down by a hydrolic mechanical lifting mechanism The proposed bed can reduce its height to zero ground surface and then afterloading the bed can move up on the vehicle This method puts down the need for expensive auxiliaryequipment s or handy loading which has safety risks In order to implement this design front differentialpickup truck vehicle were used because the presence of a differential in rear part of the pickups will preventthe bed from moving up and down The chosen lifting mechanism is similar to lift trucks mechanism The U shape chassis and the bed structure was design in Catia software and static analysis for bed structure wascarried out by Abaqus software with finite element method After finishing the bed structure design the issueof transfering the load from the bed structure to the U shape chassis was studied The proposed designationincludes 4 robust pins which were placed in U shape lateral space and transfer the load from the bed to thechassis This design was simulated in Abaqus software and the results confirm the design for U shape chassisand pins Moreover in this study the rear suspension system was fully designed The suspension systemincludes a leaf spring shock absorber and a unique independent suspension mechanism After designing thesuspension system parameters including spring hardness and shock absorber damping the appropriate leafspring was designed Also a joint wheel carrier was used to design the suspension mechanism The rearsuspension system was analyzed by rear suspension pattern design in Adams car software The analysisresults confirm the design for rear suspension system In this analysis the maximum suspension mechanismmovement without locking camber and toe angels of the wheels leaf spring deformation in differentsituations and effect of shackle attachment presence on leaf spring have been investigated Key WordsPickup Truck vehicle U shape chassis bed structure Leaf Spring Suspension Mechanism
