87 Development of FeAl Al2O3 nanocomposites coating on steel by mechanical alloying process Motahareh Akbari motahareh akbari1@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission 7 July 2015 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Mohammad Hossein Enayati ena78@cc iut ac irFathallah Karimzadeh Karimzadeh f@cc iut ac irAbstractCarbon steel is the most important engineering alloys due to low production costs and awide range of engineering properties However carbon steel has weak tribologicalproperties and low hardness Application of high resistant coatings on the steel surface isthe best solution to improve its tribological properties In this study the mechanical millingmethod was used to form nanocomposite coatings of FeAl and FeAl Al2O3 on the Ck45steel surface Mechanical milling at ambient temperture leads to surface work hardening mechanical activation and formation of nanostructured coating In this method substrateand milling balls are placed in the bowl and coating is produced on substrat as a result ofball impacts In this study the balls was 4mm in diameter and ball to powder weightratio was 10 1 Milling time was 2 to 22 hours Prepared samples after ball milling weresubjected to annealing treatment at 500 oC for 1 to 3 hours Effects of the annealingtreatment on structure hardness roughness and phase changes was investigated Thecoatings were examined using X ray diffraction scanning electron microscopy SEM roughness measurements microhardness and microscratch tests The results showed thatthe best coating with proper structure and surface uniformity was formed by using ballswith 4mm diameter and ball to powder weight ratio of 10 1 after 14 hours for FeAl andafter 18 hours for FeAl Al2O3 With increasing milling time FeAl coating thicknessincreased to 78 m with a hardness of 870Hv and FeAl Al2O3 coating thickness increasedto 98 m with a hardness of 1050Hv Annealing treatment at 500 oC for 3 hours improvedthe coating adhesion and microhardness properties due to the formation of FeAl andFeAl Al2O3 Uniformity and structural properties of FeAl Al2O3 nanocomposite coatingwas enhanced compared to the FeAl coating due to Al2O3 particle Keyword Coating Intermetallic compound FeAl Nanostructured materals Mechanicalalloying Nanocomposite
