84 Characterization of a Nanofiber Film Prepared by Extracted Cellulose Nanofibers from Corn and its Application in Laminated Epoxy Based Composites Elham Ebrahimi Dastgerdi e ebrahimi@ce iut ac ir May 26 2015 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Tayebe Behzad tbehzad@cc iut ac irAbstract Cellulose nanofiber film due to their excellent properties such as biodegradability transparency highstrength and stiffness are used in various field such as biocomposites food packaging and etc Polymer composites are used for many applications such as construction automotive and etc But they donot biodegradation easily and resulting in generation of solid waste which causes environmental pollution To meet this challenge researchers are focusing their attention on producing biodegradable composites withnatural fibers that extracted from sisal banana bamboo coir pineapple wheat straw and etc In this project cellulose nanofibers were extracted from corn stalks by applying a combination of chemical and mechanicalprocedures First In pretreatment stage chopped corn stalks were socked in concentrated NaOH solution toswell cell walls enabling chemical molecules penetrate through the crystalline region of cellulose and alsoenhance dewaxing In the next step fibers were treated by HCL to eliminate hemicellulose and pectin Inalkali treatment stage fibers were modified by diluted NaOH solution to remove soluble lignin andremaining hemicellulose and pectin In bleaching stage insoluble lignin was removed by sodium cholorite NaCLO2 After this step cellulose fibers were in micro meter size To isolated nanofibers a sonicator at400 W power was employed which was not effective and fibers were remained in micro meter size Therefore a super grinder with 1500 rpm speed was used Cellulose nanofiber film was produced by solutioncasting method The obtained film had 20 25 m thickness 86 MP t nsil str ngth nd 10 6 GP young smodulus These films were used to prepare the epoxy laminated composite and its mechanical propertieswere compare by epoxy microfiber mat composites and epoxy glass fiber mat composites The chemicalcomposition of fibers at different stages of chemical treatment were analyzed by NREL standard and showedan increase in cellulose content from 33 38 in raw fibers to 86 24 in bleached fibers The result ofFTIR test confirmed the removal of hemicellulose and lignin from fibers in chemical treatment and alsoincreasing the total crystallinity index TCI from 1 422 and 1 564 which confirm removal of amorphoushemicellulose and therefore increasing crystalline regions The morphology and size distribution ofnanofibers were characterized by FE SEM The average diameter of nanofibers were obtained to be 21 47nm The result of tensile test showed 63 and 113 increase in tensile strength and elongation at break respectively of epoxy composites by adding of a layer of cellulose nanofiber film Key words Corn Cellulose nanofibers Chemical mechanical extraction Nanofiber film Casting Epoxy composites
