82 Investigation of wear and high tempreture oxidation behavior ofcomposite coating TiB2 Co deposited by thermal spray on 304 austenitic stainless steel Milad Fadavi M fadavi@ma iut ac ir August 26 2015 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Dr M Salehi Prof E Mail surfacesalehi@hotmail comDr H Edris Prof E Mail h edris@cc iut ac irAbstractIn this research characteristics of TiB2 Co composite coatings deposited by atmosphericplasma spray have been studied In this regard cobalt and TiB2 powders were mixed inpercentage of 20 32 5 and 45 weight percent of Co in ball mill In order to have a goodflowability for thermal spray the mixed powders were granulated by spray drying process The appropriate powders were deposited by atmospheric plasma spray under 3 differentparameters on 304 austenitic stainless steel substrate X Ray diffraction of mixed powdersand coatings were analysed to characterise the constituent phases The morphology microstructure and porosity of the powders as well as the coatings were studied usingscanning electron microscope In order to characterise the tribological behavior the ball ondisk wear tests were performed at room temperature under the loads of 5 10 and 20 N forsliding distance of 1000 meters Worn surfaces were analyzed to investigate wearmechanisms using scanning electron microscope The wear volume and depth weremeasured by interference profilometer In order to investigate the oxidation resistance ofcoatings cycle oxidation tests were performed at temperature of 900 C and 40 hrs Resultsof oxidation test illustrated that coating with less porosity showed less mass gain Whereasmass gain of substrate was extremely more than coated samples EDS analysis of oxidationsample exhabited absence of oxygen in substrate which indicates improved protection ofcoating against oxidation Keywords TiB2 Co coating Wear test Oxidation Thermal spray
