129 Comparing the performance of IRIFER and LUIM models in wind erosion assessment Segzi Plain Isfahan Province Dariush Gorginpour Email addres d gorginpour 88@gmail com Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Reza Jafari reza jafari@cc iut ac irAbstractDrought low and variable rainfall and high temperature and evaporation are the main characteristics ofdry lands When desert lands are exploited as a resource e g mining and appropriate actions are notconsidered to help these lands to return to the original state these lands are affected by many negativechanges which in addition to within watershed effects have many outside watershed effects and thesurrounding environments of desert areas will also be affected One way to identify the effect of landmanagement practices in desert lands is to assess wind erosion conditions in these regions For thispurpose many models have been developed to assess the status of wind erosion in the world and many ofthem have been applied in Iran One of the developed models based on the specific conditions andcharacteristics of different regions of Iran is IRIFR which is usually used to assess the condition of winderosion in Iran The aim of this study was to compare the performance of IRIFR as an Iranian modelagainst a new Australian model called LUIM Land Use Impact Model for assessing the risk of winderosion in Segzi plain Isfahan Province Nine parameters in IRIFR model affecting wind erosion wereused and each parameter was rated based on the impact on wind erosion in 26 geomorphological faces The LUIM model integrates the relationships between landscape characteristics e g susceptibility toerosion and management practices in order to assess the risk of wind erosion using four principalcomponents including vulnerability management sensitivity and capital value The results of LUIMrevealed that 1 73 of the area 748 63 ha was classified as moderate risk of wind 84 32 of the area 36348 82 ha as high risk of wind erosion and 13 95 of the area 6022 71 ha as very high risk of winderosion Comparisons between the results of LUIM and IRIFR showed that LUIM is a suitable model inwind erosion mapping and assessment in the study area although some of the LUIM s parameters such ascapital value should be used with caution in arid lands Therefore it is recommended to evaluate thecapability of this model in other arid and semi arid environments Key words Segzi plain Wind erosion IRIFR model LUIM model
