92 Equivalent Damping and Stiffness Parameters of Tuned Sloshing Dampers TSDs with Different Arrangements of Screens Armin Hajighasem Kashani a haji@cv iut ac ir August 22 2015 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Language Farsi Degree M ScSupervisor Dr Amir Mahdi Halabian mahdi@cc iut ac irSupervisor Dr Keyvan Asghari kasghari@cc iut ac irAbstractTuned liquid damper TSD is a passive structural vibration control tool which has been widelyused due to its low installation and maintenance cost Most of the previous approaches to simulateTSD were based on linear fluid theory to describe the flow dynamics inside the TSD and since thelinear fluid theory is valid only in low amplitude excitations these simulations cannot bereferenced under intense excitation such as high return period wind storms or earthquakes andtherefore a more physical based simulation is required In present work the sloshing water insidethe TSD was simulated using Lagrangian meshfree Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics SPH as anumerical method was used to investigate the effect of screens on dynamical behavior of TSD Analgorithm was developed based on a FORTRAN code and validated with multiple benchmarkproblems A thoroughly parametric study on the screen location and solidity ratio is conducted viafour TSD models and a wide range of excitation with dimensionless amplitudes and frequency of0 01 0 07 and 0 6 1 5 respectively that results in 392 computer runs It is worth mentioning thatthe excitation has been chosen to cover a wide range of practical applications Using thesesimulations force history and dissipated energy spectrum were computed Also the modeling wasextended to measure the TSD behavior as a simple mechanical mass spring damper model inwhich the mechanical parameters were estimated using nonlinear regression based on dissipatedenergy Final results were presented as diagrams of effective mass damping and frequency of TSDversus excitation amplitude Keywords Tuned Sloshing Damper Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method screens damping energy dissipation sloshing
