Investigating the Impact of Speed Humps on Traffic Flow Parameters Case Study Isfahan Pooria hajiali pooriahajiali@gmail com Date of Submission 2015 9 7 Department of Transportation Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Meisam Akbarzadeh makbarzadeh@cc iut ac ir Abstract Speed humps as traffic calming measures which significantly affect traffic flow Recent studies mostly investigated traffic flow parameters such as speed density traffic volume capacity and safety parameters In this research impact of speed hump on speed of different kinds of vehicles and also passenger car equivalent impact for heavy vehicle is studied Emam Khomeini Avenue as a major arterial in Isfahan was selected as its traffic stream consists of almost all types of vehicles Data was collected by videotaping of the traffic stream Speed of four classes of vehicles and density of two classes of vehicles was observed Analysis revealed that the impact area of speed hump depends on the type of vehicle passing through it but the longest effect was observed on passenger cars which started slowing down from a hundred meters prior to the speed hump Acceleration pattern also depends on the vehicle type where passenger cars have the shortest length of retaining their initial speed while trucks have the longest Buses show a mixed behavior Analysis also showed that level of service has significant influence on speed change pattern of light vehicles but this parameter has no impact on heavy vehicles Results of passenger car equivalent calculation showed an increase in this parameter within the impact area of speed hump The increase after the speed hump happened to a greater extent so that it can be concluded major impact of speed hump on car passenger equivalent impact is after speed hump In the investigated case passenger car equivalent after the speed hump increased about 65 percent in comparison with no hump situation Key Words Speed Profile Impact Area Equivalent Density Average Headway Passenger Car Equivalent Impact
