82 Kamal Azadkish k azadkish@gmail com Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSuperviser Hassan S Ghaziaskar Email ghazi@cc iut ac irMohammad Taghi Jafari Email jafari@cc iut ac irAbstractThe purpose of this project is oxygen removal from nitrogen gas stream to use in variousapplications It is important especially for gas chromatography to remove oxygen to prevent anydamage to chromatographic columns and increasing its lifetime Negative corona discharge ionmobility spectrometry NCD IMS was employed for determination of oxygen in gas streams Thelimit of detection and linear dynamic range with high correlation coefficient r2 0 9997 wereobtained for oxygen gas as 8 5 and 28 14204 ppm respectively The relative standard deviations ofmethod for intraday and interday were obtained 4 and 11 respectively Suitable oxygenscavengers such as MnO and Cu powder were prepared and after testing the optimum temperatureof the reactor containing the compounds for MnO and Cu powder were obtained as 180 and 230 C respectively Lifetimes of these compounds were evaluated at their optimum temperature Dueto higher lifetime of copper powder it was chosen as the suitable oxygen scavenger To preventagglomeration of copper powder and to increase its surface area and its performance at lowertemperatures catalysts of copper on different supports such as bentonite alumina and silicondioxide prepared After evaluating the efficiency of these catalysts the silicon dioxide was chosenas the best support Catalyst particle size was chosen so that the problem of back pressure in highflow rate of gas does not exist In order to optimize the concentration of copper lifetime ofcatalysts to contain 20 30 40 50 60 and 90 of copper supported on silicon dioxide wereevaluated After testing the catalysts it was found that the catalyst containing 50 copper has thehighest performance The effectiveness of optimized catalyst was investigated at differenttemperatures of 50 100 and 150 The results showed that with temperature increase the lifetimeof the catalyst was also increased The BTS commercial catalyst was also used to evaluate itsperformance in the removal of oxygen The lifetime of BTS catalyst was also investigated at threedifferent temperatures of 50 100 and 150 C Various methods such as ICP XRF FT IR andCHNS were used to determine its nature According to the results of ICP and XRF the highestmetal content of commercial catalyst was Cu silica and magnesium To determine the commercialcatalyst surface area and optimized catalyst BET method was used for both catalysts The surfacearea obtained for Cu catalyst and commercial catalyst respectively 114 and 117 square meter pergram Key Words Measurement of gas oxygen Oxygen removal Catalyst Negative corona discharge ion mobilityspectrometry
