82Ammonia Pretreatment for Improvement of Biogas Production from Sugercane Abdolmajid Karimi abdolmajid karimi@ce iut ac ir Date of submission Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Keikhosro karimi karimi@cc iut ac irAbstractLignocellulosic biomass is among promising and attractive feedstocks which can be converted toheat steam electricity hydrogen biogas and liquid biofuel through appropriate technologies Theapplication of biomass as an alternative energy will significantly reduce CO2emission and globalwarming In the past various options were discussed for renewable energy sources andlignocellulosic material particularly agricultural wastes was proposed as the best choice forbiofuel production One suitable substrate which is available in different countries is sugarcanebagasse It is useless and inexpensive byproduct of sugar production from cane This feedstockcontains high amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose which can be converted to either fermentablesugars or biofuel However the yield of biological conversion of native bagasse is low sincebagasse is among the lignocelluloses with compact and complicated structure The cellulose ishighly crystalline fraction of bagasse and is highly protected by lignin and hemicellulose Thus apretreatment process is required in order to remove lignin or hemicellulose which leads to higherhydrolysis fermentation yield Ammonia pretreatments such as soaking in aqueous ammonia SAA is among the alkaline treatments that its major effect is delignification of biomass It isespecially effective on low lignin content biomasses such as corn stover SAA is a promisingmethod for biomass pretreatment but it is among the less investigated and developing pretreatmentmethods this method is recently presented for improvement of hydrolysis of a limited numberlignocellulosic materials however its efficiency has not been examined for many lignocellulosicmaterials e g for bagasse In this study different alkaline pretreatment at 50 70 C and 12 24hours with ammonia 10 and ethanol as co solvent with 5 25 50 concentration with sugarcaneand bagasse as substrate was investigated After this process nutration of solid and liquid wasperformed in following biogass analysis was conducted Anaerobic digestion process wasperformed with mixed culture obtained from Isfahan North Wastewater Treatment sludge atmesophilic conditions Results showed methane yield from pretreated substrate was improvedcompare to the untreated substrate Maximum methane production achieved from mixed 20 w wammonia and 25 ethanol solution for 12 hours at 70 C which was 254 and 249 ml gr VS forsugarcane and baggase respectively Keywords Ammonia pretreatment Biogas Sugarcane Bagasse Lignocellulosic materials
