Isfahan University of Technology Electrospinning of ZnO incorporated PAN nanofibers as a precursor for activated carbon nanofiber absorbent R Farhadi a Supervisors Prof Hossein Tavanai a Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Tavanai@cc iut ac ir R Farhady@tx iut ac ir Degree M Sc Language PersianAbstract Nowadays activated carbon is known as a specific multi dimensional absorbent whit application in foodand chemical industries for the removal of unpleasant odors color taste organic pollutants as well asinorganic ones in water effluent and also removing pollutants from air Activated carbon is also use forremoving bacteria and toxic chemical in drug production A bout 80 of activated carbon is use in liquidphase and the rest is used in gas phase application AC is a porous and amorphous solid and shows a highabsorbent capacity thanks to its very high surface to volume AC is employed in fiber granule and powderfrom AC carbon is produced from a variety of precursors namely wood bio wastes and Polyacrylonitrile PAN AC carbon nano fibers are basically produced by heat treatment of electrospun PAN nano fiberswhich may contain materials such metal oxides as catalysts ZnO particles with their relatively high band gap 3 37 ev and excitation bond energy of 60 meV have attracted the attention of researchers as a semi conductor metal oxide ZnO has a range of application like gas sensors anti bacterial cigarette filer hygieneand cosmetics Production of AC involves three stages of stabilization carbonization and activation Stabilization starts fromroom temperature up to 280 C under oxygen and the other stages are carried out by increasing thetemperature up to 900 C in the presence of an inert gas like nitrogen or carbon dioxide the porous structureforms when the non carbonaceous element like N2 and O2 leave the main structure as gases As literature review showed no report on the AC nano fibers containing ZnO this study aimed atinvestigating the characteristics of AC nano fibers containing ZnO nano particles The effect of oxygen andnitrogen dopants on the characteristics was also investigated Dopants are known to decrease the band gap of metal oxides and extend the activity of metal oxides in UVregion to the visible range The results showed that adding ZnO nano particles lead to a decrease in theaverage diameter of electrospun PAN nano fibers However after carbonization the presence of ZnO lead toan increase in the average diameter of AC nano fibers This is due to the carbothermic reduction originatingfrom neighboring carbon and ZnO at high temperatures which leads to the formation of carbon monoxide andZnO in gas phase leaving the matrix X ray diffraction patterns showed that ZnO nano particles lead to theformation of well developed crystals in activated carbon matrix which has a rather amorphousmicrostructure The smallest average diameter of AC containing ZnO nano particle only ZnO nano particledoped with N2 and ZnO nano particles doped whit O2 was 159 nm 98 nm and 140 nm respectively Keywords Activated Carbon Nanofibers Electrospinning ZnO nanoparticles Nanocomposite
