Evaluation of Climate Change Impacts on Groundwater Resources by Using a Combination of MODFLOW Model and Thornthwaite and Mather s Method Mustafa Gooddarzi goodarzimustafa@gmail com Date of Submition January 12 2016 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran1st Supervisor Dr J Abedi Koupai koupai@cc iut ac ir2nd Supervisor Dr M Heidarpour heidar@cc iut ac ir1st Advisor Dr H R Safavi hasafavi@cc iut ac irCollage graduate Coordinator Dr M M MajidiAbstractIn this study in order to achieve sustainable development goals in addition toevaluating the potential effects of climate change on groundwater managementstrategies for sustainable use of groundwater was also presented For evaluation of thepotential effects of climate change on groundwater a hybrid method which use acombination of AHP MODFLOW and empirical models was developed The Hybridmethod was used to evaluate effects of climate change on groundwater recharge Theresults showed that recharge rate has a decreasing trend in all regions and overall thetotal annual recharge rate will decrease in the plain Results of evaluation of climatechange impacts on crop water requirement and irrigation water requirement of croppingpattern of the study area showed that the effect of climate change on crop waterrequirement is not very significant and the maximum increase is about 5 5 But incase of irrigation water demands the increase is considerable and for some crops itreaches to 18 This will results in more groundwater extraction therefore management and adaptation measures to deal with climate change in the future isabsolutely necessary In this study in order to determine groundwater drought a newindex which is called GRDI was developed Then this index was used for optimizationof cropping pattern in order to reach to a sustainable condition in the region The resultsof optimization of cropping pattern for the region showed that the cultivation of cropssuch as rice sugar beet cotton tobacco and maize should be stopped in the region Even cultivation of a product like wheat which is a major and strategic crop for theregion should be stopped or at least reduced to a minimum level in drought years Furthermore forage crops such as alfalfa and clover should be minimized or replacedwith crops such as forage sorghum According to the results the selected croppingpatterns for three scenarios including normal dry and wet years are in such a way that Professor at Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University ofTechnology Isfahan Iran Tel 98 31 33913433 Professor at Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University ofTechnology Isfahan Iran Tel 983133913436 Associate Professor at Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Tel 98 31 33912701 2
