Image denoising using time fractional partial di erential equations Masoumeh Zafarian Rigaki m zafarian@math iut ac ir 2016 Department of Mathematical Sciences Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Supervisor Dr Reza Mokhtari mokhtari@cc iut ac ir Advisor Dr Nader Karimi nader karimi@cc iut ac ir 2010 MSC 65M99 94A08 Keywords Fractional di usion wave equation volterra integral equation predictor correctormethod levy operator digital image denoising AbstractThe concept of fractional calculus goes back to the 17th century while in recent years it is becoming auseful eld of research in science and engineering and plays a very important role in several research elds such as image and signal processing This discipline has been devoted to dealing with derivativesand integrals to an arbitrary order real or even complex Among various de nitions such as Caputo Riemann Liouville and Grunwald Letnikov which have been provided for fractional derivatives andintegrals the rst one is more popular in particular for time variables In image processing fractionalcalculus can be applied for ltering and edge detection giving a new approach to enhance the quality ofdigital images Although there are several tools for image processing some approaches based on partialdi erential equations PDEs are more interesting for numerical analysts Mathematical models ofmany natural phenomena are partial di erential equations or a system of PDEs with some initialand boundary conditions PDEs are used in image processing for denoising ltering inpainting restorations segmentation and many others PDEs popularity is due to their advantages in theoryand calculations Several methods have been proposed for reducing noises from digital images Amongseveral approaches proposed to solve this problem PDE based methods are the most powerful Inorder to preserve the image structure when removing the noise Perona and Malik were the rst whoapplied an isotropic di usion expressed through a linear heat equation with an anisotropic di usion Then Bai and Feng proposed an anisotropic model on the basis of the space fractional derivatives
