Stress analysis of horizontal axis wind turbine blade considering fluid structure interaction Hamid Ghaderi h ghaderi@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2015 08 22 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mohammad Mashayekhi mashayekhi@cc iut ac irAbstract In recent years the rising cost of fossil fuels and irreversible effects of this type of energyon the environment has caused researchers to pay more attention to renewable energy Thewind energy as a cheap and always available energy more than other renewable energy sourceshas attracted the attention of scientists The horizontal axis wind turbines have caused large scale plants to be built Identifying critical condition in the creation of blade failure due to thehigh cost of design construction and maintenance of horizontal axis wind turbines isnecessary In previous years the primary methods to simulate wind flow and estimate theaerodynamic forces acting on the blade was used The nature of turbulent flow boundary layerflow over complex geometry of the blade the interaction of wind flow and blade surfaces causing a more accurate method to calculate the aerodynamic forces Fluid StructureInteraction FSI simulations predict the behavior of structures and fluid and their effects oneach other The aim of this study is to evaluate the stress caused by the wind flow around theblade with FSI model For this purpose the geometry of the blade and its layered composite isdetermined by using ANSYS ACP Then wind flow around the blade by choosing theappropriate mesh network and turbulent model in ANSYS CFX is simulated The pressurecaused by the wind flow on the blade for different wind speeds by analysis of wind flowaround the blade is obtained With the help of FSI capabilities in ANSYS Workbench theobtained pressure from CFD analysis of fluid as pressure forces is applied to Static Structureenvironment of ANSYS Workbench software Stress field and deflection along the blade arecalculated from the static analysis of blade The results show in the high speed of wind flow bytransferring the maximum pressure from the leading edge toward the center of blade Stressalong the blade suddenly increase Keywords horizontal axis wind turbines blade Fluid structure interaction ANSYS
