442 Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of Recyclable Wastes Collection Process in Isfahan City Hajar Ghafeli Damami hdamamy@yahoo com January17 2016 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83 111 IranDegree MSc Language FarsiDr Hossein Moradi hossein moradi@cc iut ac irDr Nourollah Mirghaffari mnorolah@cc iut ac irAbstractWaste sorting as well as waste collection at the source is one of the processing techniquesimproving the efficiency of waste management system In this study Life cycle assessmentapproach applied for life cycle impact assessment of the Recyclable Waste Collection Process RWCP in Isfahan City Recyclable Waste Collection Process RWCP in Isfahan City consists ofcollecting recyclable wastes from houses stations and commercial centers as three sub processes The environmental impacts of the RWCP quantified in all these three sectors Life cycle impactassessment of RWCP has been conducted in three sections as current situation and two differentscenarios For LCA of current situation environmental impacts of three collection sub processeswere conducted using SimaPro software These impacts have been assessed individually as well asthe aggregation of three sub processes as a whole system Moreover first scenario focused oncutting off the collection of recyclable wastes RWs from houses in some city districts such as 5 6 7 8 and 13 and calculating the environmental impacts Second scenario is focused onincreasing the containing space of vehicles in Recyclable Waste Collection Stations RWCSs Third and Forth scenarios focused on decreasing the collection from houses and concentrate onRWCSs It means that the collection process being conducted from houses of half of districts orcollection process cut off in all districts Based on these we assumed that if 30 50 70 or90 of recyclable wastes could transfer to RWCS The results showed that the collecting fromhouses sector has the most environmental impacts which could be due to the fact that this sectorcovers the entire street network for full service to houses and vehicles have to travel greaterdistance than the other two parts which leads to greater fuel and tires consumption The results forfirst scenario showed that as much as the collection and transportation in the houses sector isreducing the waste load in RWCS is increasing but the waste load for municipal wastes transportto compost station will be increased The results for third and Forth scenarios showed that withcutting of the collection process in both half of districts as well as all districts theenvironmental impacts are decreasing But it should be noted that part of this lost impacts are notbeing decreased completely but they transferred to municipal waste collection process which aretransport to compost station Within all scenarios and current situation scenario with completelycutting off and 90 transfer to RWCS is the best scenario with lower environmental impacts Theresults showed that the potential impact of this scenario on Human health damage categorycomparing to current situation will be decreased by 52 on Ecosystem quality damage 46 andon Climate change damage by 36 and on Resources damage 33 respectively Keywords Environmental Life Cycle Assessment Recyclable Waste Collection IMPACT2002 Isfahan City
