83 Design and Analysis of Gas Sensor Array with Variable Self Regulating Operating Point for Gas Detection Mohammad Maleki mohammad maleki@ec iut ac ir Data of Submission Saturday January 09 2016 Department of Electical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree Master of Science Language PersianSupervisor Dr Vahid Ghafarinia ghafarinia@cc iut ac irAbstract Gas analysis instruments are required in many applications Among the availabletechnologies the so called Electronic Noses has become popular due to their specificadvantages such as portability and low cost So far gas sensor arrays and thermally modulated metal oxide gas sensors have shown to be a suitable choice for developing anElectronic Nose The response patterns produced by both of these methods can be used as afingerprint for gas identification Here we have proposed a method for biasing the metaloxide gas sensors of a sensor array In this method instead of a fixed bias and equivalentlya fixed operating temperature the input power to the microheater is adjusted based on theresistance of the sensing layer In this way the microheater is thermally and electricallycoupled to the sensing layer At any environmental conditions the temperature of gassensors is adjusted so that the circuit reaches a stable condition To experimentally verifythe applicability of the proposed methods two generic metal oxide gas sensors were used The temperature dependent responses of the sensors were obtained experimentally Then two different bias circuits were designed to bias the sensors in a self regulated mode ofoperation The self regulated metal oxide gas sensors were exposed to differentconcentrations of the selected target gases The resulted transient responses were recordedas the fingerprints of gas sensors The statistical analysis of these patterns showed that theycontain enough discriminating information for the identification of target gases In additionto gas identification results shows that the proposed self regulated bias circuits canremarkably reduce the power consumption of the sensor and can memorize the exposureevents Keyword Gas Sensor Array Metal Oxide Gas Sensor Temperature Modulation Self Regulating OperatingPoint Electronic Nose
