116The Effect of Drainage Outflow on Dry Drainage Using a Laboratory Model Shabnam Pouriamehr sh pouriamehr@ag iut ac ir March 12 2016 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Behrouz Mostafazadeh Fard behrouz@cc iut ac irAbstractOne of the management methods used in arid and semi arid areas to remove salts from irrigated lands intothe fallow lands is dry drainage In dry drainage due to salts movement from irrigated area to the fallowland it is important to study soil salinity changes with time In many areas due to lake of irrigation water the drainage outflow is used for irrigation This study was carried out using a dry drainage laboratory modelto simulate and study s alts movement and salt leaching from irrigated field to the fallow land for conditionof constant water table The physical model was designed using steel having 200 cm length 100 cm heightand 50 cm wide The model was divided into two sections of irrig ation area and the fallow land The soiltexture used in the model was loam The irrigation water was obtained by diluting the drain waters ofKhuzestan Agro Industry Company to test the effect of reusing drainage water on solute transport in drydrainage The model was studied for soil salinities of 3 and 7 dS m irrigation water salinities of 5 and 15dS m ground water salinities of 1 and 3 dS m and water table of 50 cm from soil surface After eachexperiment soil salinity sodium calcium and magnesium concentratios in the soil solution for bothirrigated area and fallow land were measured and the spatial distributions of salinity sodium calcium andmagnesium concentrations were plotted The results showed that under dry drainage salt leaching fromirrigated area to the fallow land occrued As the irrigation water salinity increased the leaching of sodiumfrom irrigated area into the fallow land increased For irrigation water salinity of 5 dS m the salinity ofremoved salt from surface of fallow land after 49 days from start of the experiment was 86 7 dS m and thesodium concentration was 340 meq l For irrigation water salinity of 15 dS m the salinity of removed saltfrom surface of fallow land after 49 days from start of the experiment was 146 7 dS m and the sodiumconcentration was 800 meq l The results of simulating dry drainage using the laboratory model showedthat in dry drainage solutes can be easily transfered from irrigated area to the fallow land which the resultis better soil conditions for the irrigated area Keywords Dry drainage Fallow land Salt leaching Solute concentration Drainagewater Water table
