110 Evaluation of Super Absorbent Polymer on Water Use Efficiency and Growth Iindices of Saffron plant Crocus Sativus L Ali Abedini Email ali abedini@ag iut ac ir March 7 2016 College of Agriculture Deptartment of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor J Abedi Koupai Email koupai@cc iut ac irAbstractIran is located at arid and semi arid region of the world which in the recent years has encountered challengesof food and water security Reduction of water resources related to increasing of population has been alwaysmankind s challenges which need some investigations The most quantity of water is used by agriculturalsector Using sustainable agriculture and high value agricultural products such as saffron plant as red goldand the most expensive spice in the world and using moisture absorbent for better management withincreasing water use productivity are important solutions in order to face with mentioned challenges Usingsuper absorbent polymers should be considered as appropriate method for holding moisture in the soil thatreduces and optimizes water usage In this study effects of using moisture absorbents polymers with threedifferent irrigation frequencies on growth indices of saffron plant have been evaluated A split plotexperimental design with completely randomized blocks has been used with 33 treatments and 3 replications The treatments were three irrigation frequencies 14 21 days and regional irrigation frequency used byfarmers nine absorbent treatments that consisted Aquasorb Stockosorb and Boloorab absorbent with threelevels of 100 200 and 300 kg ha 1 and finally two other treatments one of them is mixture of soil withfertilizer trap based on regional agricultural activities and the other is control treatment with no fertilizer orany other amendments According to obtained results effect of livestock fertilizer on most of saffron plantcharacteristics were statistically significant in comparison with other treatments For moisture absorbents thebest plant yield and yield components of the plant were obtained by 300 kg ha 1 application of absorbenttreatment Aquasorb super absorbent effects on some of plant characteristics were better than the otherpolymerized super absorbents Among the production indices of the saffron plant corms fresh flower drystigma can be mentioned which are the most economical indices Among spreading index corms which ismore than 8 g is related to Aquasob treatment with level of 300 kg ha 1 for 14 days irrigation frequency For21 days irrigation frequency Aquasob treatment with level 300 kg ha 1 absorbent application in combinationwith fertilizer trap had similar and better results than the other treatments For all of three irrigationfrequencies the most of fresh flower production was obtained by Aquasob treatment with 300 kg ha 1 level ofabsorbent application and fertilizer trap The dry stigma in this experimental design Aquasob and Boloorabmoisture absorbent at 300 kg ha 1 for 14 days irrigation frequency and 21 days irrigation frequency the mostyield were obtained by Aquasob treatment at level 300 kg ha 1 According to irrigation frequencies whichwere applied in this study and investigation of irrigation water use efficiency based on stigma yield the mostyield was obtained as consequences of 21 days irrigation frequency with using Aquasob super absorbent at300 kg ha 1 and fertilizer trap consisted 0 7473 and 0 7929 g m 3 respectively Spreading of the root is trulyimportant for sustainable growth of plant for later years so the treatments consisted Aquasob super absorbentat 300 kg ha 1 and fertilizer trap had better prformence for water use Keywords saffron superabsorbent Aquasorb Stockosorb Boloorab fertilizer trap WUE
