83 Effect of EHD Treatment on Yield and Physico Chemical Properties of Extracted Cellulose from Sugar Cane Bagasse Maryam Beygy Harchegani M Beygy@ag iut ac ir March 07 2016 Department of Food Science and Technology Isfahan University of Technology Esfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Ali Nasirpour ali nasirpour@cc iut ac ir Abstract In agricultural processes and related industries byproducts are produced besides the main products in great amounts Bagasse an important source of cellulose is an agricultural waste product that is produced after the extraction of juice from sugar Cellulose is the most abundant renewable polymer in the world and it has many applications in paper food color and etc industries So the main purposes of this study were to extract the cellulose from the waste of the sugarcane bagasse using high voltage electric field as a novel method and to evaluate the effect of the used treatment on the quality and other characteristics of the extracted cellulose Firstly Cellulose was extracted using mendal et al method 2011 Response surface methodology RSM was used for optimization of clarification conditions to Hydrolysis conditions under high voltage electric field were determined conditions to evaluate the effect of high voltage electric field on the properties of the extr cted cellulose Sug rc ne w stes were purch sed from sug r producing nd l ter l industries f ctory in Khuzestan The prepared sugarcane bagasse were grinded and sieved using industrial grinder and a sieve with the mesh of 35 the size of 0 5 mm respectively The soxhlet method was employed to remove the fat of the samples using hexane for 6 hours The delignification of the fat free samples were performed using 0 7 w v sodium chlorite solution followed by washing the samples using distilled water and the extraction of the lignin and the part of the hemicelluloses from the discolor residue with 250 ml 5 w v sodium sulphite solution The obtained fibers were mixed with 250 ml 17 5 w v sodium hydroxide solution to remove the hemicelluloses Cellulose was separated from other materials using filtration and washed until neutral pH of the washing water had reached Then it was dried in an oven with the temperature of 80oC The optimum treatment was selected from the point of view of the purity of the extracted cellulose The chemically morphologically thermally and structurally evaluations were performed The results of the chemical analysis showed that the cellulose percentage is increased 55 1 in optimum treatment compared to raw material after alkaline treatment The evaluation of the fibers morphology using SEM revealed the small diameter and great length of the fibers as compared to microcrystalline cellulose of Sigma Company XRD was used to evaluate the crystalline structure of the obtained cellulose and it was found that the cellulose prepared using optimum tre tment is morphous nd h sn t the cryst lline structure where s the bl nk cellulose h s the cryst ls of type II The evaluation of the functional groups of the cellulose structure was performed using FTIR and the results were in good agreement with XRD results TGA was used for thermal analysis of the extracted celluloses and the results showed that the temperature of the thermal degradation is increased as compared to blank samples and is higher than 300oC Keywords cellulose extraction amorphous cellulose crystallinity index electro hydro dynamic
