Electromechanical Behavior of Vibration based Energy Harvesters in Low Frequency Environment Reza Ramezanpour reza ramezanpour k@gmail com Date of Submission 5 19 2016 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree Ph D Language FarsiSupervisor Hassan Nahvi1 hnahvi@cc iut ac ir1st Advisor Saeed Ziaei Rad12nd Advisor Hamid Reza Mirdamadi1Department Graduate Coordinator Mohammad Reza SalimpourAbstractOne of the common methods for solving the problem of harvesting energy from low frequencyenvironments is frequency up conversion mechanism is which low frequency vibrations are convertedto high frequency ones In this research at first a design for rotary piezoelectric frequency up converting energy harvester is presented In this design an array of piezoelectric bi morph cantileverbeams is fixed to a base plate in a circular manner in order to reduce the sensitivity of the device to itsinitial orientation regarding the excitation directions as well as to increase the generated power Amathematical formulation is developed for the mentioned system in order to investigate theelectromechanical behavior of the harvester when is subjected to different types of harmonicexcitations By comparing the generated power of the harvester with eight piezoelectric beams to thesame harvester with one piezoelectric beam it is found that increasing the number of beams canincrease the generated power This increase however is more prominent for higher amplitudes ofexcitations The effects of out of plane vibrations on the electromechanical behavior of the harvesterare investigated numerically A real model of the proposed design is fabricated in order todemonstrate the applicability of this kind of harvesters for scavenging energy from low frequencyenvironments The power output of 0 68 mW is obtained for excitation characteristics of 5 26 ms 2 and2 Hz The power density of 0 58 W mm 3 is achieved With the aim of increasing the overall generated power of the harvester from one side and decreasingthe arrangement sensitivity of it from the other side an alternative design is proposed which incomparison to the previously presented one can effectively decrease the overall manufacturing costof the system A linearly increasing sweep is conducted in the pendulum rotational speed and itseffects on the generated voltage of the harvester are investigated numerically It is demonstrated thathigher angular velocity of the pendulum will not necessarily lead to higher generated voltage Considering the aforementioned simulations several peaks are observed in the voltage signal whichtheir locations depend on the number of rotating magnet s as well as the natural frequency of thepiezoelectric beam The mentioned locations are accurately predicted by a proposed mathematicalformulation The numerical simulations show that although the optimum number of rotating magnetsgenerally cannot be found using an appropriate number of rotating magnets can lead to at least twotimes higher generated power 1 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran
