83 Genetic Variationof Morphological and Seed Related Traits in Different Species of Sainfoin Onobrychis spp Under Normal and Water Deficit Conditions Elham mohammadi Mohammadi6886@gmail com September 21 2016 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mohammad Mahdi Majidi majidi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe breeding of reproductive characteristics especially seed production potential along with the othereconomic features has received increasing attention Despite of the wide geographical distribution ofSainfoin Onobrychis viciifolia Scop in Iran there is limited studies about evaluation of genetic variationof species and seed traits in cultivated and wild varieties of it Development of high yielding andcompatible adaptive artificial varieties needs to germplasm evaluation selection of superior genotypesand determination of appropriate parents among them This study was conducted to evaluate the geneticvariation of different sainfoin species in terms of seed production and related traits Ninety two genotypesfrom twenty two species including twenty wild species along with two cultivated species were evaluatedunder non stressed and drought stress environments using randomized complete block design with threereplicates during two years 2015 2016 at research farm of Isfahan University of Technology IUT Theresults showed significant differences among species and high genetic variations among varieties withinspecies The highest value of coefficient variation in wild and cultivated species was observed for seedyield per plant O sintenisii showed the most days to flowering under both non stressed and droughtstress environments and it placed in late category class as well as this species showed the highest seedyield at both years and both moisture environments O persica had the lowest days to floweringAccording to the results of this study O vassilczenkoi showed the lower seed yield under drought stresscondition Two species of O vassilczenkoi and O sintenisii have identified as most resistant and O persica and O sativa as most susceptible species to powdery mildew The results of correlationcoefficients showed that under stress condition seed yield cut 1 showed significantly positivecorrelations with the number of seeds per panicle number of stem per plant plant height sensitivity topowdery mildew and hundred seed weight and under non stressed condition showed significantlynegative correlation with days to flowering Seed yield of both cuts showed significantly positivecorrelation with the number of seeds per panicle and at the second cut this trait showed a significantlynegative correlation with powdery mildew Cluster analysis based on the morphological and agronomictraits separated the studied species into three clusters which the populations of first and third clusters hadthe most genetic distance and can used as the parents of hybridization and in recurrent selections Basedon the results of principal component analysis under stress compared non stressed condition therelationships between traits and the positions of the species changed and the species were divided intothree separate groups which this grouping matched with the grouping of cluster analysis Identification ofsuperior traits in the wild species evaluated in this study such as high seed yield and resistance topowdery mildew can be a starting point for the future breeding studies in sainfoin via the crossing of wildspecies with the cultivated sainfoin in order to address the weakness of cultivated species of this plant Keywords Sainfoin Genetic variation Wild species Moisture stress Seed yield
