Agronomic Evaluation of Some Genotypes of Sesame under Two Irrigation Regimes Sesamum indicum L Mohsen Yari Mohsenyari2014@yahoo com November 2 2016 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MSc Language FarsiSupervisor Ghodratollah Saeidi gsaeidi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe oil seed crops are economically important because of their big contribution in providing the energy for bothhuman and livestock The increase of demand for vegetable oils in the world market have caused to pay more attentionto oilseed production and expanding the research programs for these crops Water deficit stress is an important factorto limit the production of the field crops in many areas of the world particularly in arid and semi arid areas This studywas conducted to evaluate 25 sesame genotypes separately at two irrigation regimes based on the MAD 60 and 90 for normal and stress condition respectively The experiments were conducted at the Research Farm of IsfahanUniversity of Technology and a randomized complete block design with three replications was used for evaluation ofthe genotypes in each irrigation regime The results of analysis of variance showed that there were significantdifferences among the genotypes for all of the studied traits except for days to emergence membrane stability indexand relative water content in normal irrigation However in stress condition the genotypes showed significantdifferences for all studied traits except for emergence The results of combined analysis of variance showed that theirrigation regime significantly affected on all of the traits that after irrigation regimes were measured Also theinteraction effect between genotypes and irrigation regimes was significant for the traits of capsules per plant seedsper capsule seed weight seed yield per plant and seed yield per plot The range of the average seed yield per plot forgenotypes under normal conditions between 346 8 to 1933 3 kg ha average 1032 2 kg ha and in limited irrigationregime between 262 to 1367 3 kg ha average 676 1 kg ha was variable The correlation coefficients showed that seedyield per plant had significant and positive correlation with capsules per plant and seed weight per capsule in bothmoisture conditions Genetic and phenotypic coefficient of variations showed that there was high genetic variation formost of the traits in both irrigation regimes especially in stress condition Moreover relatively high broad senseheritability was estimated for traits of branches per plant seeds per capsule seed yield per plant seed yield per plotin both irrigation regimes These results indicate that selection can be effective to improve these agronomic traits andto develop drought tolerant genotypes The stepwise regression showed that capsules per plant and seeds per capsulesignificantly contributed in 63 of the variation for seed yield per plan in each of irrigation conditions The results ofpath analysis also revealed that in both irrigation regimes capsules per plant had the highest direct and positive effecton seed yield per plant Generally it seems that capsules per plant can be considered as an appropriate selectioncriterion in breeding programs of sesame to improve seed yield and developing drought tolerant cultivars Key words Sesame Moisture regimes Drought stress Seed yield Yield components
