Experimental Investigation Modeling and Optimization of Supercritical Extraction of Thymol from Ajwain Seeds Arezoo Goudarzi a goodarzydareshoory@ce iut ac ir Date of submission 2016 12 10 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Seyyed Mohammad Ghoreishi ghoreshi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe use of plants as medicine is as old as human civilization People in both developing anddeveloped countries use plants in an attempt to cure various diseases Research has suggested thatAjwain with scientific name Carum copticum possesses anticancer antiseptic carminative antimicrobial antiviral antiulcer antihypertensive antitussive antiplatelet stimulant diuretic Most of its effects are often attributed to thymol that thymol is its major component Therefore necessity of thymol extraction is obvious In this study thymol was extracted via supercriticalcarbon dioxide with athanol as an entrainer and Subsequently the results were compared withSoxhlet method as the base case of 100 recovery Design of experiment carried out with responsesurface methodology RSM using Minitab software The operating temperature 35 75 C theoperating pressure 10 30 Mpa the dynamic extraction time 40 120 min and the flow rate ofCO2 0 8 2 4 ml min have been considered as operating variables The extracted samples wereanalyzed by gas chromatograohy GC The thymol recovery results indicated that the dataadequately fitted into a second order polynomial model R2 and modified R2 of the model are98 42 and 97 04 It was predicted that the optimum extraction conditions within theexperimental ranges would be the extraction pressure of 19 5MPa temperature of 35 C flow rateof 1 68 ml min and exraction time of 111 87 min with 56 86 recovery These were optimised bygenetic algorithm the optimal operating conditions were observed at 42 73 C 20 42 MPa 1 85ml min and 104 3 min to achieve 56 078 recovery There was good agreement between genetic andRSM methods of optimization Also in this study Mathematical modeling process has been doneusing two broken and intact cell model and shirinking model The results show that both modelsare able to predict the experimental data but shirinking model with R2 0 98 2 is more accuratematch with the recovery of the experiment Key WordsThymol Supercritical extraction Response surface methodology Broken and intact model Shirinking model Genetic algorithm
