1 Numerical study of flow and heat transfer around flexible insert with fluid structure interaction in 2D simulations Shabnam Mohammadshahi Sh mohammadshahi@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2017 03 01 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Mahdi Nili Ahmadabadi m nili@cc iut ac ir Mohammad Reza Salimpour salimpour@cc iut ac irAbstract Vibrations are induced because of the oscillating forces by the vortex shedding from bluff body haspotential application for many fields such as energy harvesting or biological systems In the present study itis tried to effect in the turbulence and eddies in the flow by using of flexible plate which is a passive heattransfer enhancement technique Since the increase in heat transfer cause increasing friction coefficient payattention to heat transfer and pressure loss with together is important In this work at first the channelwithout and then the channel with stationary cylinder and channel with flexible plate attached to thecylinder were simulated Solid and fluid equations are solved by fluid solid interactions at the same time intwo dimensional The results show that added a flexible plate behind the stationary cylinder causesdecreasing the amplitude of lift force coefficient vortex shedding frequency and pressure loss in channel Finally using vortex induced vibrations with oscillating plate were improved performance evaluationcriteria After that the role of parameteres like the place and shape of cylinder the length and materialproperties of oscillating plate such as density and Young s modulus Reynolds number Prandtl number andflow regime were analyzed It can be concluded existing the bluff body before oscillating plate improvedperformance evaluation criteria When the oscillating plate is longer reducing the thickness of the thermalboundary layer and so the heat transfer enhancement is more Changing the natural frequency by changingthe density or Young s modulus of plate alters the frequency and amplitude of oscillation but theperformance evaluation criteria does not change The shape of cylinder has a significant effect on theintensity of the vortex generation and when the maximum amplitude of oscillating is equal decreasing thevortex shedding frequency is caused decreasing heat transfer Enhancement of heat transfer because ofincrese Prandtl number and decrese Reynolds number increases performance evaluation criteria Keywords Vortex induced vibration Fluid solid interaction Flexible plate Heat transfer Performance evaluation criteria Vortex shedding
