Conversion of fruit peel wastes into biochar and itsapplication for removal of lead and zinc from aqueous solutions Rezvan Torki r torki@na iut ir January 21 2017 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MSc Language PersianDr Norolah Mirghafari mnorolah@cc iut ac irDr Mohsen Soleimani m soleimani@cc iut ac irAbstract Fruit wastes are generated as a by product of food industry in large quantities that their depositionin landfills causes environmental problems Therefore recycling of these wastes is very important Since these wastes are cheap renewable available and producible in large amount and theirsources are quickly restored their conversion into the biochar and their application as heavy metalsorbents from wastewater are important in view of economical and environmental aspects In thisstudy the peel wastes of pomegranate orange and lemon were collected from various fruit juicefactories and were converted into biochar using slow pyrolysis at 300 400 and 500 C undernitrogen atmosphere for one hour Then their ability to remove lead Pb and zinc Zn fromaqueous solutions in a batch experiments was investigated separately The results showed that thebiochar derived from orange peel in temperature of 500 C OP BC biochar derived frompomegranate pell in temperature of 500 C PP BC and biochar derived from lemon peel intemperature of 400 C LP BC had the most ability for removal of Pb and Zn from aqueoussolutions The properties of biochar samples were characterized using FT IR spectroscopy BETand SEM analyses Although the samples had relatively low surface area 0 38 1 00 m2 g theyshowed a high ability for removal of Pb from aqueous solutions FTIR spectroscopy described themajor function groups on the surface of biochars The results revealed the presence of carboxyl hydroxyl and carbonyl groups which were likely responsible for the adsorption of Pb and Zn ions The N2 adsorption desorption isotherms indicated type III isotherm for three biochar samples Inthis study the effect of initial concentrations of Pb 10 25 50 100 and 200 mg L and Zn 1 5 10 100 and 200 mg L dose of biochar 1 5 10 20 and 30 g L contact time 5 15 30 60 and 120min and pH solution 2 3 4 5 6 were investigated using Taguchi design experiments Based onthe results initial concentration of Zn was the most important factor for optimization process of Znsorption while dose of biochar had the greatest effect for Pb Although the contribution of variousfactors in absorption of Pb and Zn for all samples was not same the least significant factor forthem was contact time The optimum conditions for Pb sorption of three biochar samples wereinitial concentration of Pb 100 mg L dose of biochar 30 g L and pH of solution 6 which resultedin 95 removal efficiency of Pb The optimum conditions for Zn sorption of the samples wasinitial concentration of Zn 1 mg L dose of biochar 30 g L and pH of solution 5 that in thiscondition removal efficiency of Zn was 97 The equilibrium data were well tted with Freundlichmodel and the adsorption process was well described by pseudo second order model Keywords Adsorption Biochar Fruit wastes Heavy metals
