98 Evaluating conservation strategies for gazelle species in Khorasan Razavi protected areas using AHP SWOT Fatemeh Maasum fatemehmaasum@yahoo com Februery 22 2017 Department of Natural Resource Isfahan Universityof Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianDr Mansoureh Malekian mmalekian@cc iut ac irAbstractGoitered gazelle is one of the important mammals of Iran that once lived in most of the plains anddeserts of Iran However its population has declined sharply as a result of several threats such ashabitat destruction Its conservation status in IUCN Red List has changed from near threatened in2003 to vulnerable category since 2006 The reduction of gazelle populations has happened aroundthe country including the east Khorasan Razavi Province in which gazelle populations drasticallyreduced and the species has been distinct in some areas The aim of this study was to investigatethe conservation status of gazelles in Khorasan Razavi protected areas and to analyze the internal strengths and weaknesses and external factors opportunities and threats using an strategicapproach such as AHP SWOT The required information was collected from literature papers andreports questionnaires and interviews with local people Based on the results effective internaland external factors for management of this species include weakness 0 426 threats 0 311 opportunities 0 162 and strength 0 101 respectively This highlights the impact of weaknessesand threats in management of this species Overall SWOT in these protected areas revealed adefensive pattern WT with a final value of 0 438 According to the definition of this pattern weshould adopt conservation strategies which minimize weaknesses and avoid threats We concludethat short and long term plans should be prepared to reduce the threats for this species in KhorasanRazavi Province Key words Biodiversty Strategic plan Goitred gazelle Khorasan Razavi AHP SWOT
