The use of silica byproduct ZPP company for the removal of fluoride and uranium recovery from wastewater of sura company Maryam Pishgar m pishgar@ce iut ac ir 6 January 2017 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Seyed Mohammad Ghoreishi Seyed Javad AhmadiAdvisor Mohammadreza GhasemiAbstract The waste generated during the process of converting yellowcake into uranium hexafluoride iscontaining uranium compounds The amount of uranium in these wastes is considerable becausethe amount of wastewater is very high and so the uranium recovery is vital and very important The solvent extraction can be a desirable method for uranium recovery from wastes if thepercentage of fluoride ions in the solution is reduced extensively Also the storage of wastes isnot economically feasible and it has many environmental problems because it has radioactiveeffects The purpose of this project was to remove fluoride from uranium wastewater with silicawastes from zirconium processing company The wastes were selected from evaporated poolshaving high content of sodium and fluorine ions The mother solution was prepared based onstatistical experiments design response surface method RSM using the software Minitab 17 The optimum results of mother solution in the range of experiments with this method wereobtained as nitric acid of 55 temperature of 20 oc and liquid to solid mass ratio L S of 6 5 respectively Then the silica waste was used to remove fluoride ions from wastewater Theoptimal operating conditions for effective variables were obtained The RSM analysis analysisindicated that the experimental data have a very good compatibility with second orderpolynomial models R2 and modified R2 of the model were calculated to be 96 8 and 93 91 respectively The optimum conditions were predicted via RSM to be temperature of 25 oc silicamass of 4 gr and reaction time of 70 minutes for the fluoride removal of 98 57 w w Theaccuracy of validated with triplicate experiments giving the average extraction recovery of98 1 1 Keyword Fluoride removal Uranium Silica Response surface method 97
