87Hot Corrosion Performance of Gas Phase Aluminide MCrAlY bond coaton Inconel 718 superalloy Bahareh Rezaeinejad b rezaei@ma iut ac irDepartment of Materials EngineeringIsfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M ScSupervisor Dr Abdolmajid Eslami m eslami@cc iut ac ir Dr Mahdi Salehi salehi@hotmail co uk AbstractGas phase aluminizing is a practical method that can be used to form an aluminide layeron the surfaces of the superalloys exposing to severe environments It seems that applyinga MCrAlY bond coat by HVOF thermal spray technique between aluminide top layer andthe substrate is desired to protect the substrate from environmental hot corrosion attacks Inthis study hot corrosion behavior of these coatings applied on IN718 is investigated andcompared to the MCrAlY coatings and aluminide coatings in the case they re applied onthe superalloy IN718 individually and bare superalloy Hot corrosion test done bydeposition of Na2SO4 25 Wt K2SO4 salts on the surface of samples and remaining in 900 C for 120 hrs Results showed that bare alloy samples had a significant weight lose andhard attacks on the surface however coated samples showed better hot corrosionresistance High value diffusion of Fe into the aluminide coating from substrate andconsequently forming porous Fe rich oxides is the reason of less hot corrosion resistance ofsimple aluminide layer than other coated samples CoNiCrAlY coated samples formed athin alumina layer on the surface that spalled by Al depletion of CoNiCrAlY after 120 hrhot corrosion test Samples with aluminide CoNiCrAlY coatings showed excellent hotcorrosion resistance in the test conditions than other samples These coatings by havingmore than 30 wt Al in their chemical composition formed a dense and continueous Al2O3 scale and protected the sub layers from the severe environmental attacks These samplesremained resistant even after 120 hr hot corrosion test Spallation mechanisms of thesamples in comparison to high hot corrosion resistance of aluminide CoNiCrAlY coatingsare discussed Key words Ni base superalloy hot corrosion aluminide coating CoNiCrAlY gas phase aluminizing HVOF thermal spray
