81AbstractIn this investigation AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel joint properties were evaluated Taguchi design of experiment were selected for PCGTAW parameter optimization Differentwelding parameter including the pulse current base current frequency and percentage oftime in three level were selected Pulsed current of 120 140 160 A based current of 40 50 60 A frequency 2 5 and 7 Hz and percentage of time of 30 50 and 70 were selected Taguchi L9 orthogonal array was used for experimental design Corrosion resistance wasevaluated in 1M H2SO4 solution For accessing the best current density of passivation LBcharacterization was used The optimized condition of welding was 140 A for pulsed current 50 A for based current 5 Hz for frequency and 50 for percentage of time Using theseparameters current density logarithm was 0 00031 A Variance analysis showed thatpercentage of time of pulsed current were 46 and base current whit 36 were the mosteffective parameters on passivation current density for welding of AISI 321 austeniticstainless steels by PCGTAW Also results shows that the Taguchi method was effective butit may be associated with some errors For evaluation of mechanical properties shear punchtest was used Tensile strength was calculated using shear punch test results In optimizedcondition the shear force peak was 3200 N and tensile strength was 612 MPa Fracturesurface of shear punch test specimen had two regions i e the shear deformation region andfracture region For same heat input optimized PCGTAW parameters with CCGTAWmethod were compared Passivation current density in both process were similar Tensilestrength and shear force peak were also quite similar Delta ferrite formation in weld metalin both processes was calculated by Image J software and was close to 17 Results showedthat the most effective parameter on AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel joint properties wasthe heat input Keywords AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel PCGTAW Potentiodynamic polarization test Shearpunch test Taguchi
