Assessment of Morphological and Phytochemical Characteristics andDetection of Some Genes Responsible for Synthesis of Antioxidants in Some Endemic Species of Apiaceae Abolghasem Akbarian a akbarian89@gmail com September 11 2017 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran 1st Supervisor Mehdi Rahimmalek mrahimmalek@cc iut ac ir 2nd Supervisor Mohammad Reza Sabzalian sabzalian@cc iut ac ir 1st Advisor Ghodratollah Saeidi gsaeidi@cc iut ac ir College Graduate Program Coordinator Mehran Shirvani Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College of Agriculture Isfahan University of TechnologyAbstract The Apiaceae family is known to be one of the most important medicinal plant families andhas a widespread distribution in various climatic regions due to its secondary metabolites including essential oils and antioxidants Plant antioxidants have fewer side effects comparedto synthetic ones The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity among 17populations of Dorema aucheri Ferula assa foetida and Prangos ferulacea Lindl regards tosome morphological and phytochemical traits at research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Dardan Province Isfahan and Margoon Province Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad The experiment was carried out according to a randomizedcomplete block design with three replicates for each environments Detection of someeffective genes responsible for synthesis of antioxidants and molecular study based on SRAPmarker was also performed In this part of the study an enzymatic antioxidant gene aox2 and two genes involved in the synthesis of flavonoids chs and pal2 were detected Selectedand conserved regions of each gene were identified in other plant species and were sequencedin the studied genus Variance analysis showed that morphological traits except dry weightand leaf area and phytochemical traits were significantly different between populations locations and years This indicates a high diversity in terms of traits and the possibility ofselection for these traits among the studied populations in different environmental conditions In this study the essential oil content of the studied populations varied in differentenvironments The populations of the Ferula 0 37 2 86 Prangos 0 32 1 48 andDorema 0 26 0 67 had the highest and the lowest essential oil The three main compoundsidentified in the studied plants were thymol caryophyllene and caryophyllen oxide Theeffect of environmental factors on phytochemical traits using canonical correlation analysis CCA showed that the highest phenolic compounds were found in sandy conditions low
