Abstract Cellulose chitosan and chitin are the most abundant biodegradable natural polymers These polymers have found a wide spectrum of applications in different industries Thedissolution of these polymers in conventional solvents is restricted by many inter and intra molecular hydrogen bonds repeated in a specific pattern These periodically repeatedhydrogen bonds are held responsible for formation of a rigid network and hence limitedapplications of the mentioned polymers Overall since many applications of the above mentioned polymers depend on the dissolution process synthesis a useful solvent to dissolvecellulose is of great importance and still controversial Ionic liquids ILs can be consideredas powerful solvents for dissolving polymers In this research work an acidic ionic liquid i e 1 carboxy methyl pyrridiniumchloride was synthesized and investigated for its potential to dissolve cellulose chitosanand chitin First the optimum weight fraction of IL water was determined to be 60 40 wt according to the effective dissolution of cellulose chitosan and chitin The synthesized ILexhibits more favorable interplay with water which is evidenced by higher water content inIL water mixture This is in contrast to previously examined ILs and demonstrates the lessdependency of dissolution process to water content in cellulose and IL Under theseconditions the reduced solution viscosity could account for a reduction in dissolution costs Then the dissolved cellulose chitosan and chitin were regenerated in water or ethanol andthen characterized with respect to their properties Keywords Cellulose Chitosan Chitin Ionic liquid Regeneration
