Abstract Laminated composite plates have been widely used in various industries such asmarine aerospace and transportation because of their remarkable properties namely theirstrength stiffness and lightness Consequently in order to optimize the structural design identifying governing mechanical behavior seems inevitable In this matter many engineersand researchers have studied the behavior of composite plates As a result various theorieshave been developed Among all existing theories having considering different types ofdistributions for the transverse shear strains specific theories with displacement variablesdivide into equivalent single layer models and theories of elasticity The equivalent singlelayer models contain classical plate theory shear deformation plate theories refined platetheory and zig zag theories The theories of elasticity contain layer wise models and multiplemodel methods The higher order zig zag theory which is used in the present study is asample of equivalent single layer models In the present study static analysis mechanical buckling thermal buckling and freevibration analysis of single layer plates and laminated composite plates are carried out basedon different boundary conditions in longitudinal and transverse directions According to thefibers orientation in each layer laminated composite plates divide into two groups of cross ply laminated composite plates and angle ply laminated composite plates In the presentstudy the ordinary finite strip method is used for static analysis axial stability and freevibration analysis of mentioned plates Afterwards the complex finite strip method is usedin order to analyze the shear in stability Also in the present study for accelerating theconvergence process bubble shape functions are used in the transverse direction In thisstudy firstly the results of single layer plates are presented and afterwards the results oflaminated composite plates are presented based on different boundary conditions inlongitudinal and transverse directions Keywords Laminated composite plates Higher order zig zag theory Ordinary finite stripmethod Complex finite strip method Bubble shape functions Static analysis Free vibrationanalysis Mechanical and thermal bucklin
