Surface interaction of MnO2 nanorods with 3 aminopropyltriethoxy silane L valine amino acid and poly vinyl alcohol Preparation and study of poly vinyl chloride nanocomposites properties Hashem Tabebordbar Bordbarhashem@yahoo com h tabebordbar@ch iut ac ir December 2017 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 I R Iran 1st Supervisor Prof Shadpour Mallakpour Email mallak@cc iut ac ir mallak777@yahoo com mallakpour84@alumni ufl edu2nd Supervisors Dr Amir Abdolmaleki E mail abdolmaleki@cc iut ac irAdvisor Prof Kazem karami Department Graduate Coordinator Dr Alireza Najafi Chermahini Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran Abstract In this thesis the new nanocomposites NCs based on poly vinyl chloride PVC and modified MnO2 nanoreods were prepared through solvent casting technique with the assistance of ultrasonicirradiation To achieve a good dispersion and uniform distribution of MnO2 nanorods and their morecompatibility with PVC matrix the surface of synthesized MnO2 nanorods was modified with 3 aminopropyltriethoxy silane KH550 L valine amino acid LVA and poly vinyl alcohol PVA Themodified and unmodified nanorods were investigated with the different technique such as fourier transforminfrared X ray diffraction energy dispersive X ray field emission scanning electron microscopy FE SEM transmission electron microscopy TEM and thermogravimetric analysis The comparison of FE SEM imagesof pure and modified MnO2 nanorods showed well the effect of surface modification in preventing theaggregation of nanorods In following the NC films were prepared by adding different quantities of modified MnO2 nanorods 1 3 and 5 wt in the PVC matrix through ultrasonic irradiation technique and identified MnO2by different methods The FE SEM and TEM images of prepared NCs exhibited well that theparticles were distributed uniformly with a nano sized and rod like morphology within PVC matrix The effectof modified nanorods on mechanical and thermal properties of PVC was studied The results showed that thethermal stability and tensile properties of NCs containing modified nanorods were improved compared to purePVC and PVC NCs containing unmodified nanorods The improvement in thermal and mechanical propertieswas also increased with increasing the amounts of modified MnO2 nanorods The performance of preparedNC films as adsorbent was investigated for adsorption of lead ions from aqueous solutions Efficient factorson adsorption process including the initial concentration of the pollutant pH amount of adsorbent time andtemperature were investigated The obtained data showed that the PVC MnO2 KH550 PVC MnO2 LVA and PVC MnO2 PVA NCs have a good potential for removal of lead ions from aqueous solutions Theadsorption process exhibited a high dependence on the pH values The study of adsorption isotherms indicatedthat Langmuir model was more suitable for describing the adsorption equilibrium and the adsorption kineticsstudy demonstrated that pseudo second order model was the best fit with the experimental data The maximumlead ion adsorption capacity was 36 5 25 and 32 4 mg g for PVC MnO2 KH550 PVC MnO2 LVA andPVC MnO2 PVA NCs 5 wt respectively Thermodynamic investigations indicated that the adsorptionprocess is spontaneous and endothermic along with increasing randomness for all NCs Keywords Polymer nanocomposite Poly vinyl chloride Manganese dioxide nanorods Surfacemodification Pb II ion adsorption
