1 Practical Architectures for Content Centric Networks Zeinab Zali z zali@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission November 29 2017 Doctor of Philosophy Thesis Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Dr Massoud Reza Hashemi hashemim@cc iut ac irAdvisor Dr Mohammad Hossein Manshaei manshaei@cc iut ac irDepartment Graduate Program Coordinator Dr Mohammadreza Taban Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranAbstract The proposed solutions for the ICN architecture are associated with many complexities including but notlimited to pervasive caching and incompatibility with legacy networks In This thesis we propose some solutionsto deploy an ICN on legacy network that are compatible to traditional softwares and hardwares The mainprinciples are implementing at the edge of the legacy networks using edge caching and utilizing SoftwareDe ned Networks Therefore an ICN overlay is proposed that is deployed within a coalition of a group ofsome local networks who desire to join a content centric network Then we enhance the proposed ICN usingthe end users machines as cache storages The results from an experiment and some trace driven simulationsshow that latency is decreased and the content retrieval speed is increased compared with a direct downloadfrom the original Web servers Moreover our proposed SDN solution facilitates implementing and managingforwarding and caching in ICN using network virtualization in SDN switches A proposed general model withan adopted topology management strategy based on SDN achieves high performance in terms of low failure ininterest satisfaction and reduced download time compared to a plain ICN Also we describe and implement aproposed method to convert each desired SDN enabled switch to a content centric one based on NDN method Key Words Information Centric Network Software De ned Network Overlay Caching Virtual NetworkIntroductionAs a result of a signi cant increase in content oriented services currently content deliveryconstitutes a big portion of the Internet traf c While the Internet is initially based on end to end communication among hosts which does not necessarily correspond to the best solutionfor content delivery ICN proposes a content centric paradigm in which the host location isno more a key parameter In this model the original server publishes the content into thenetwork and the network is responsible for delivering it to every user who seeks that content The main objective in ICN is replacing the content location address with the content s name In addition to providing easier and quicker access to content as a main part of the existingnetwork traf c this feature will enable many capabilities in future Internet including IoT Therefore enabling ICN will make a big difference for the network services and applications
