Cadmium uptake by lettuce from a soil treated with biosolids containing different ratios of Cd Zn and its human health risk assessment Aliakbarzare aliakbar zare@ag iut ac ir 9 May 2018 Departman of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran1st Supervisor Majid Afyuni Majid Afyuni@gmail com2st Supervisor Mohammad Jafar Malakouti MJMalakouti@modares ac ir Professor Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Professor Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Tarbiat Modares UniversityAbstractCadmium Cd is toxic to animals and humans after it accumulates over decades in thekidney cortex Food crops grown in Cd contaminated soils are the primary sources ofexcessive Cd entry into humans Although plant available Zn concentration in soil is animportant factor which can greatly reduces Cd uptake by plant roots and itstranslocation into the edible parts Cd Zn ratio is suggested to be a more importantfactor in comparison with Zn concentration alone in determining Cd uptake by plants Inthe present study the physiological mechanisms of Cd absorption by roots and itstranslocation to leaves of lettuce Lactuca sativa L at various Cd Zn ratios in the rootingmedia were investigated Our results showed that First Study a in all Cd levels decrease in Cd Zn ratio through increasing Zn content in nutrient solution significantlyreduced root symplastic Cd content and also decreased the amount Cd transferring toxylem and its accumulation in lettuce leaf b The greatest symplastic Cd concentration 1087 mg kg DW and shoot Cd content 64 mg kg DW were observed in the Cd Znratio of 0 800 and the lowest amounts of were obtained in Cd Zn ratios equal to 0 010and lower In the second study intracellular Cd distribution in cell components were affected byvarious Cd Zn ratios The greatest Cd content observed in root cell wall fraction 65 85percent and the lowest amounts observed in cytosol fraction 11 19 percent andorganelles 6 1 6 7 percent Our results indicate increasing Zn concentration in nutrientsolution up to 100 M at constant Cd level Cd concentration in cell wall fraction andcytosol decreased while increased in organelles In the third study a the lowest Cd concentration in plant shoot obtained in treatments inwhich rubber powder was the zinc source while application of zinc nano oxide as Znsource resulted to the greatest Cd content in plant shoot b Also the Cd risk assessmentfor consumer showed that among rubber powder had the lowest risk for non cancerpatients and zinc nano oxide had the highest risk for non cancer patients THQ index atdifferent ages The THQ values for different age groups ranged 0 12 to 0 37 In theforth study results showed that increasing Cd Zn ratio increases the Cd accumulation inrat s liver and kidney The greatest Cd concentration in the liver 35 0 mg kg andkidney 22 47 mg kg were in Cd Zn ratio of 0 10 Key Words Cd Zn ratio Biosolid Lettuce Nutrient solution Rat
