Genetic variation of different Stachys lavandulifolia genotypes in respect to morphological traits total phenolic content flavonoid and antioxidant activity under salt stress condition iliaeh hhredi rliaeh ghredi7169@gmail com Desember 3 2018 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 8111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M Rahimmalek rahimmalek@cc iut ac irAbstractIran has valuable resources of medicinal and ornamental plants Due to the importance ofmedicinal herbs many researches of plant sciences have been studied the various aspects ofthese plants About 15 percent of the country s land is facing a salinity problem one of thebiggest limiting factors for plant growth and crop production in the world Stachyslavandulifolia From the Lamiaceae family is an important medicinal plant that is used in thepharmaceutical and sanitary industry and has a large distribution in Iran One of the importantgoals in the study of medicinal plants is to increase the amount of antioxidant compounds thatare important in these plants Therefore in this study 10 samples Stachys based on randomizedcomplete randomized design with three replications were evaluated for morphological traits phenolic compounds flavonoids and antioxidant activity under four levels of salt stress control 2 4 and 6 ds m were studied The results of analysis of variance showed asignificant difference amoung genotypes in four levels of salinity in relation to the studiedtraits Salinity stress reduced morphological traits while increasing the amount of phenol andflavonoids and antioxidant activity The highest height leaf length internode length and freshweight were observed in genotype Shahrekord 1 The highest leaf diameter and stem diameterwere obtained in genotype Damaneh 6 and the highest septum length and width in genotypeDamaneh 1 The highest number of main and lateral branches and dry weight were observed ingenotype Damaneh 4 the highest number of florets and leaf widths in the genotype Damaneh 3and semirum1 respectively The highest total phenol and flavonoids were found in GenotypeDamaneh 1 and Semirom 2 respectively The results of cluster analysis of samples in non salinity conditions were classified into three groups at the stress level of 2 ds m in threegroups at a stress level of 4 ds m in four groups and at a stress level of 6 ds m was alsodivided into three groups The results showed that genotype Semirom 1 Semirom 2 Damaneh 5and Damaneh 6 had the highest regenerative property and had the highest purification potentialof DPPH free radicals by antioxidants in the extract among genotypes Therefore thesegenotypes can be justified in terms of significant role such as antioxidant activity andantimicrobial properties and pharmaceutical uses Also genotypes of Damaneh 4 andShahrekord 1 were introduced due to favorable morphological characteristics including numberof leaves leaf size number of branches and number of florets as cover plants Key Words trchas Salinity stress Morphological characteristics Phenolic compounds 88
