Design of a Harmonic Generator Using Nonlinear Metasurfaces Taher Zahedi t zahedi@ec iut ac ir January 12 2019 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Assist Prof Zaker Hossein Firouzeh zhfirouzeh@cc iut ac ir Abstract Nonlinear optics is one field of optics science which was presented after laser invention Thenonlinearity implies from nonlinear response of material in laser coherent light matter interaction Infact when the material illuminated by laser light we face nonlinear properties resulting from highorders of electric field in polarization relation Inherently the materials have very weak nonlinearnature so in several last decades to increase nonlinear efficiency different techniques such as novelmaterials or artificial structures have been proposed One of the proposed materials is combination ofIII V semiconductors layers to compose multi quantum well structures These structures excite non linearity using intersubband transitions and exhibit one of the largest bulk nonlinearities among allcondensed matter systems However these heterostructures have a significant drawback their non linearity can be achieved only for normally polarized light to the layers To remove this limitation theplasmonic metasurfaces have been used In linear optics the metasurfaces have a variety applicationsin wave engineering such as adjust amplitude phase wavefront and polarization of transmitted andreflected waves for this flexibility these can be used in nonlinear optics for implementation of non linear processes In this manner the nonlinear response is significantly improved using coupling ofelectromagnetics modes of plasmonic metasurface with intersubband transitions of heterostructure In this thesis our goal is design of the plasmonic metasurface based on multi quantum well substratefor third harmonic generation process Since for these metasurfaces the limitation factor is satura tion effects for high input intensity we modeled them Then we designed three multi quantum wellsand three resonators for third harmonic generation process and finally their nonlinear response hasbeen obtained and compared together Key Words Nonlinear Optics Metasurface Quantum Well Third Harmonic Generation
