122Palladium II and Nickel II complexes with tridentate diaminomaleonitrile based Schiff base ligands Synthesis characterization theoretical and experimental study of structures and catalytic applications Zeinab Beigi z beigi@ch iut ac ir Department of chemistry Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran Supervisor Dr Ali Hossien Kianfar akianfar@cc iut ac ir Advisor Dr Hossein Farrokhpour farrokhphossein@gmail comAbstractIn the first section of this thesis five new tridentate Schiff base ligands L1 L5 star shapeligand Ld and their complexes were synthesized and characterized by FT IR UV Vis and 1H NMR techniques The crystal structure of the complexes were determined by the single crystalX ray analysis In addition the optimized geometries of the ligands and nickel complexes alongwith their IR spectra were calculated by the density functional theory DFT The time dependent density functional theory TD DFT was employed to calculate the absorptionspectra of the structures and the calculated IR and absorption spectra were compared with thecorresponding experimental spectra to confirm the experimental results Due to the presenceof metals in different oxidation states and since the Schiff basees are strong ligands instabilazing of the oxidation state the catalytic performance of these complexes wasinvestigated In the second part of this project the electrocatalytic properties of nickel II complexes were studied The nickel complexes were electrochemically dispersed onto multi wall carbon nanotubes MWCNTs and their electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation ofmethanol have been studied by cyclic voltammetry Based on the results the nickel complexeswere found to be active catalysts in the electro oxidation of methanol In the next step Thecatalytic potential of the synthesized Pd II complexes was evaluated in Suzuki Miyaura cross coupling reaction by choosing different arylhalides and phenylboronic acid Comparing withcomplexes of phosphorus ligands the advantage of using Schiff base is that they are air stableand moisture insensitive Also tridentate Schiff bases by modulating of the steric around the
