Effect of adding alfalfa hay or rumen contents in starter diet on rumen development and Performance of suckling calves Ahmad Kazemi Ahmadkazemi781@gmail com Jan 20 2019 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor A Ghasemi ghasemi@cc iut ac irAbstractThis study was conducted to investigate the effects of adding ruminal contents or fluidand alfalfa fodder on the starter feed on the performance fermentation and developmentof rumen in Holstein infants 48 male and female Holstein calves mean weight 43 3kg were completely randomized to treatments 1 control starter 2 starter containing 8percent alfalfa fodder 3 alfalfa containing 8 percent alfalfa fodder plus ruminal fluidtransmissions and 4 starter containing 8 percent of rumen contents Calves wereintroduced from the age of 5 days and were ablactated at 55 days The contents of therumen were transferred to the separator under dewatering pressure and into the vacuumdryer Then it was dried at 60 C and pressure 10 kPa for 4 hours The machine s outputwas negative for bacterial counting including salmonella total polymorphisms and I coli The ruminal fluid was taken to the calves from fistulated cattle for 5 days andimmediately after purification it was immediately transferred directly to the mouth ofthe calves in question with a 20cc syringe The results of data analysis showed thatinitial consumption daily weight gain and body weight after ablactation and the wholeperiod for the consumer group has dried ruminal contents were the highest and thelowest for the control group Calves fed with ruminal fluid or alfalfa fodder feed hadhigher feed intake than calves in the control group after the ablactation Transmission ofruminal fluid prior to the ablactating did not have an effect on starter consumption dailyweight gain and body weight but after the ablactation in proportion to the calves fedwith control diet and the ration contains 8 of alfalfa forage were higher In general digestibility was significantly higher in calves fed with rumen content than calves inother groups The protein digestibility of calves fed with ruminal fluid was significantlyhigher than the control group and alfalfa fodder Regarding the behavioral patterns starter feed including ruminal content and alfalfa fodder consumer calves had moreruminants and less non nutritional behavior than calves in the control group In terms ofmicrobial population the ruminal content feed and especially the ruminal fluidincreased the rumen protozoan population while the population of ruminal fungi withruminal content feed was the most and the control group was the lowest the populationof protozoa and fungi in calves fed with alfalfa fodder was between the control groupand the supplement group with ruminal content or fluid The lowest rate of stool statuswas observed in the calves fed with the ruminal contents and fluid the rectaltemperature was higher in these groups Overall with the results the presence ofruminal contents in the starter feed increased the calf s performance and health Key words ruminal content ruminal fluid ruminal microbial development infantcalves 115
